Does anyone else get increased indigestion during times of stress/anxiety? I have been taking lanzaprazole 15 mg for ages and find that I sometimes have to increase it when my burping after eating/drinking anything starts again. I am just leaving a really stressful job and starting a new business and am panicking that I will have to have another endoscopy (had one 5 years ago to investigate pain under ribs and burping). Nothing showed up and no medication given, only had the lanzaprazole for lump in throat sensation, now don't seem able to get off it as start to get heartburn etc when I do. Is this all my health anxiety/stress making it worse?? Also have discomfort in my upper right part of chest just before I burp like trapped wind. So fed up with this vicious circle. Does anyone else up their dosage sometimes??

I have been on omeprazole and still been having terrible problems because of very stressful period I've been going through. Do you take anything else? I was prescribed gaviscon as well, but even then its only when the stress has been relieved that the symptoms abate.

Also, my specialist said I could take omeprazole twice a day instead of once a day, so you could check with your doctor to see if you could up your dosage.

I sometimes take Rennies or Windeze in between and I think the latter helps. My brother in law who is a GP says its ok to up the dose if I feel I need it. Just hate being so reliant on these drugs. I know I have had these patches of indigestion before and they do come and go so I doubt it is anything serious, just drive myself mad and always so scared to go to doc in case he sends me for the camera down again! Plus the fact that I am always at the docs, and they know I am an anxious patient.

I am the same Jane, I'm on 40mg of omeprazole a day but when I'm stressed it still affects my stomach. When I'm anxious or upset my stomach gets really tight and it's no surprise that even with the PPI that it feels bad.

I find two things really help: a high quality manuka honey and aloe vera juice. I take one teaspoon of each twice a day on an empty stomach. So in the morning I take it about 20 mins before breakfast, and the same before tea in the evenings.

They both have a very soothing effect on your stomach and I find they help me feel so much better when I'm stressed.

Make sure it's OK to take them with whatever meds you're on.

Thanks for your reply - I actually have some manuka honey in the cupbaord, so may try some with my camomile tea. Did use to have aloe vera but can't remember if that helped or not, have tried so many different things?!

Don't heat the honey by putting it in your tea Jane, just eat a teaspoon whole - its the best way to get the full effect of it's medicinal properties!

I'd fotgotten about camomile tea, I always found that very soothing too. And lots of water of course.

And remember to avoid the things that will upset your stomach even more like spicy/acidic/greasy foods.

Hi there, I took omeprazole for many years but would still get the odd breakthrough acid attack. I moved to Australia a couple of years ago and the doc here suggested trying another way of getting my tummy under control. So I did some research and this is what worked for me and in just a few months I didn't need to take any type of acid medicine apart from odd days of over indulgence!
So 20ml of pure Aloe Vera juice every morning and evening before food and two or three slippery elm tablets x2 day. Use the aloe Vera juice whenever you feel acidic. Avoid foods that upset you and alcohol for a couple of weeks . There after I continue to use both before having a curry or a few drinks.
I too suffer with daily anxiety and find my tummy worse when I'm very stressed.

Just come across this thread and the opening post could have been written by me, this is my first post so hello!

I have a dose of 15mg Lanzaprazole which generally stops the acid but I still get a full chest and burping, 30mg seems to stop it but I am loathe to take the increased dose! If I stop taking it the acid returns after a couple of days!

My doctor has sent me for a Hpylori blood test. I am a little overweight and am trying to lose weight with moderate but slow success, also my diet hasnt been great although again I am now making an effort to improve it as I have read that it and losing weight can help people with GERD, I do tend to comfort eat. I have been stressed for the last few years with a terminally ill father who passed away three months ago so I am sure it is all behind the indigestion problems.

I found with lanzoprazole that I can't just take it as necessary. I have to take it long term. I have 30mg but my GP has said I can double it if I can breakthrough pain in the short term.

yes, stress can cause indigestion especially to the extreme. I would recommend an appointment to an ENT just to check for no throat damage, as LPR, can cause this. Interesting fact though, stress can cause indigestion by irritating the vagus nerve, and the vagus nerve irritated results in palpitations. It's a pretty bad cycle, and I had this problem for a while. He recommended me a high dose course of a PPI, twice a day, before breakfast and dinner. It worked. Btw, LPR, is another case of GERD, except that it mostly silent, as in no heartburn. 30% of cases have heartburn, as it goes to the throat. LPR, made my life a living nightmare as it also caused me to have asthma. Needless to say, after 6 weeks of treatment, I am better! Wishing you the best!

Thanks for your kind replies, only just seen them.

I went to the ENT clinic earlier this year and had camera up nose and into throat to check out a persistent post nasal drip thing. Checked my throat and voice box as kept clearing throat. Said all was ok, nasal drip and cough all went away almost next day! Amazingly! This seems to happen a lot with me, symptom, worry, tests, more worry, if all ok, symptoms go. Should be glad realy but it is a constant vicious cycle. Is this common with anxiety sufferers? Cough and cattarh seems to be back again now, could be remnants of a cold, although with my mind who knows!!
I have made the monumental decision to stop Lanzaprazole all together as have read that it is not a good idea to stay on it long term. So far 6th day off it and doing ok, still got the indigestion but it is no worse. Told doctor I was stopping it and tried to find out why I was on it in the first place. Originally prescribed it by previous ENT consultant for lump in throat sensation, prescribed for4 weeks and all went away. When throat sensation came back few years later, doc suggested retaking it which I did. On and off it since I think although cant really remember. Had an endoscopy 5 years ago, all normal with no mention of reflux, just mild gastritis and possible bile reflux but never prescribed anything, so am hoping that I can stay off them now who knows, it's a minefield and so difficult to get satisfactory answers without more and more tests and investigations. Even had one Doc ask me when all this was going to stop??
Sorry for long rambling post.
