Has anyone had the feeling of a lump in the throat.I have had this feeling for 3 months.I did go to the doctor but he couldn't see or feel anything.I have read about people who have had this feeling, and apparently it goes away as fast as it comes.I don't know if this is in my mind as my boss has just died of throat cancer aged 55.
Does anyone know if the mind is powerful enough to imagine this.

Hey stringy, I have your same problem, it's called 'Globus Hysterious' and it is made up by the mind. Its the involuntary muscles in your neck that contractand create that lump in the throat feeling.

I have had it for 9 years, and if it isnt relieved i gag, so i eat food or have a drink. though its getting alot worse because of my a-levels. i need to de-stress as that fuels it. it's disrupting my a-level classes now. for 2 monday mornings in a row i've had to leave my morning lesson because it got so bad i though i was going to gag. Though i'm trying to do more work before its due and going to bed earlier, just have to see if it works for next monday.

Yes its a horrible symptom and does seem to be encouraged for me anyway when I am feeling more stressed. I usually keep a bottle of water or diluted juice near me and just sip on that until I 'forget' about it.

HI Stringy,I also have this lump in my throat thing but I also feel it in my back when I swallow. Im sure its because your colleague died from cancer.B oth of my parents died from cancer and this makes our imaginations run wild. You must trust your doctor, and keep searching for ways to relax and un-hook this anxiety. All the bestIMOGEN.

Hello all,
I will begin by saying that I understand how distressful this condition is
And that it is very much a vicious circle, the more stressed about the problem you
become the worse it feels.
I stated with this problem when I was nine years old, and I didn’t understand what
The problem was until six months ago, I am now forty one.

I complained to my parents that I had something lodged in my throat, and was terrified I was going to suffocate. On seeing that I was able to breathe without any problems they
Dismissed it as nothing more than attention seeking, but the problem still persisted.
I complained a number of times about my problem, and my mother began to tiyer at my
Constant wining and on one occasion grabbed hold of me and stuck her finger down
My throat causing me to gag. I was so terrified that she would repeat this action that I
Didn’t mention it again.

A few weeks later my parents went out one evening, and left a baby sitter in charge of
Me my brother and sister. I still had the problem but I think it may have been exsasipated
By the fact that we were being looked after by a stranger, it got so bad that I began to panic, and so did the baby sitter, she phoned the restaurant where they were eating and expressed her concerns to my mother. They came back early and were extremely annoyed at me for ruining their evening.

My mother finally decided to take me to the doctors, and after examining me, he decided
To refer me to a specialist, due to the fact that my tonsils were abnormally large.
The specialist decided to have my tonsils removed, and a few weeks later I spent three days in hospital.

Initially the problem seemed to go away, but after a few weeks I was back to square one,
I didn’t dare tell my parents, so ive been dealing with the problem ever since.
I was bullied at school, and their seemed to be a pattern between the spates of bullying
And my throat problem, but the fact that the problem would come and go suggested to
Me that it was not life threatening.

A few months ago my anxiety levels were high due to work and domestic problems,
Which in turn worsened my throat condition. I decide to search the net for people who
Were experiencing the same problem, and came across a diagram which clearly showed
The upper esophageal sphincter. Until seeing this diagram I wasn’t even aware that their
Was one, it providing me with an explanation as to what the problem was.

Anxiety can affect this sphincter causing it to spasm and contract giving the unpleasant
Sensation of something being lodged in your throat, and the more anxious you become
The worse the sensation. It is imposable for those people who have not suffered with this
problem to fully appreciate how incredibly distressing this condition can be.

And for those of you who do suffer, hang in their You Will Be Ok. Nick

Regarding eating, I have seen a lot about a lump in the throat from reflux of acid. If you suffer from heartburn and waterbrash, sometimes you don't even know you do it can happen in bed when you sleep, then this can cause it too.

To you all...
this can help a lot! read through first and maybe get someone to read it to you as you do it (not essential)
Think about the feeling of the lump, give it a colour (the first you think of)
Now think about a calm pleasant place or feeling, Give that a colour
Imagine pulling the lump colour out of you as a swirling (forward tumbling and upright) gaseous loop, now with your hands swirl with the gas tumbling your hands (this may temporarily make it worse, but this next bit stops that)
as you reverse the direction of the swirl (towards you, spinning backwards and downwards) change the colour to the calm one and reverse your hand spinning and really intencify the calm colour, do this til your throat feels free and comfortable, repeat as often as needed but in future think of what stresses you and miss out the first bad bit, just do the good swirl while thinking of what stresses you, but if there is no specific stressor, just swirl that lovely colour and relaaaax.
Also remember DEEEP breathing is natures calmer downer, do it often!!!!
I'll keep an eye on this post to see how you all get on with it.
I use this in phobia therapy, but it's good for any emotional overwhelm.

This sensation can often be caused by GERD. Prilosec is sold over the counter now and is a great medicine for this. Diet and exercise can be beneficial too. This sensation can also be caused by anxiety and is one of the more common symptoms of it, even if you don't feel particularly "anxious." Sinus congestion can also sometimes cause a sensation of having a lump in your throat.

Hello, I've been worried for about a week now about the sensation of a lump in my throat, made worse by going to the Doctors about it. I went with two problems and he (rightly) seemed more concerned about the fact I coughed up blood, and not so bothered about the throat problem. I have since been for an X Ray and they have found a mark on my lung! I have to go back in 2 weeks for more tests. But I've been imagining that the throat and the lung problem were connected and that it was all going to be too late. But since reading that it is quite a common problem I have been reassured by posts I have read. I am still worried, but hopefully I won't be a jibbering wreck by the time I have to go back. I have started to use a bach remedy, the white chesnut in the hope that it stops my mind running over every possibility.

Hello again I managed to make it to my appointment today without breaking down, a few tears along the way but nothing serious. The doctor looked at the x ray and examined me and now things I have a collapsed lung. So it's back to the hospital tomorrow for an bronchosopy (sp?) a CT scan next week and another appointment with the Doctor in a fortnight. I wonder if I can get an extra large bottle of Bach remedy and extra large packs of painkillers!
Oh I even remembered to do the deep breathing while sitting in the waiting room.

Hi all just back from doctors. Had the camera up the nose and down the throat done. Doc said it was globus hysterious and that my throat is clear and no signs of cancer.
I have worried myself sick over this, I have broken a tooth by grinding them at night.
Thank you all for your kind words.
Yay I'm going to be ok. Now to look forward to a good nights sleep :-) oh yes and a trip to the dentist :-( another £200 to pay for a crown.

I found this info online, hope it helps......

Information for patients with a lump in the throat sensation

Causes

This syndrome results from a spasm in the cricopharyngeus muscle. It is a self limiting disorder that will resolve on its own.

Symptoms

Lump in the throat sensation
feels like a golf ball, tennis ball, fur ball... is stuck in my throat
feels like my tie is too tight
feel like I am being strangled
my throat feels swollen
The symptoms can be mimicked by pushing on the cartilage in the neck just below the Adams apple.
The lump comes and goes depending on the day.
Symptoms are usually best in the AM and worse later in the day
Stress aggravates the symptoms.
Saliva is difficult to swallow yet food is easy to swallow.
Eating, in fact, often makes the tightness go away for a time.
The symptoms are similar to getting choked up at a wedding or a funeral.
Physiology 101

There are two valves in the esophagus or swallowing tube. They are normally lightly contracted and they relax when you swallow, so that food can pass through them going to the stomach. They then squeeze closed again to prevent regurgitation of the stomach contents. If the normal contraction becomes a spasm (like a charlie horse of the calf muscle) these symptoms start. Stress often makes these spasms much worse. Many people have experienced neck tightness when stressed and this is similar. Even if not caused by stress, stress will make the spasm much worse. Relaxation in many forms (from alcohol to meditation) may improve the symptoms.

A management program

An exam of the neck and throat is extemely important to eliminate serious problems. In fact, it enters most peoples minds that a lump in the throat might be a cancer. In practice, real lumps in the throat, such as a cancer are not felt. It is one of the reasons that a cancer can get so big before it is discovered. It probably is fortunate that we don't have great sensation in the throat as we would then feel every particle of food, with every meal as it travels down the throat. So lacking great sensation in the throat, problems are a little mysterious there.

Unfortunately, many physicians are not familiar with how symptomatic a cricopharyngeal spasm can be and I often see patients who have been extensively tested with Barium swallows, esophageal endoscopies, pH testing, CT scans, xrays, MRI scans and they all come back normal or possibly with some finding that is completely unrelated to the lump in the throat sensation. They may have been tried on numerous medication including proton pump inhibitors for presumed reflux.

Really, just a good exam of the throat, voice box and neck is all that is necessary and it is sufficient as well. I record my exam so that I can play it back and show the patient the structures in the throat. If possible I may try to pass my endoscope behind the voice box into the upper esophagus where the sphincter is. This will also elicit the symptoms, just as pushing lightly on the cricoid cartilage from externally elicits the symptoms.

You should know the following:

These symptoms are so characteristic that as soon as a patient tells me they have a lump in the throat, I can usually describe many of their symptoms to them.
After the exam, just knowing the tightness is not a sign of cancer frequently helps relieve the discomfort.
You will get better. Often improvement is over several weeks or even a few months, but occurs once one knows what the problem is.
Warm fluids should comfort the throat. Consider a cup of warm tea (preferably without caffeine) when the lump is bothersome.
If stress lets up, the symptoms improve. Think about what stress might be making this lump worse.
Muscle relaxants, such as valium, would be a good treatment, except for their addictive properties.
Medication
I sometimes dispense several valium (perhaps 4 to 10) as a test to prove the symptoms are from muscle spasms. I recommend taking one of the Valium on a weekend, when being alert is not important. When the lump occurs, one takes the Valium. Within an hour, there should be significant improvement in the lump sensation. If the symptoms improve after taking the muscle relaxant, then the symptoms are reasonably from a muscle spasm. Again, the knowledge that a muscle relaxant makes a lump disappear can help confirm that the cause of the lump is from a muscle and not an actual lump.
I have also tried injections with a local anesthetic, often with good, but temporary results. It does help to confirm in the patients mind, there is the possibility of relief.
If a local anesthetic injections helps, I have with inconsistent results injected botulinum toxin into the cricopharyngeus muscle, sometimes with prolonged relief.

Benefits

The symptoms go away.
Questions

I receive more email on this page than I can possibly respond to. The essence of many of the emails is that some or several symptoms are slightly different than on this page. Or perhaps, you have been examined by several ENT doctors who gave a different opinion than I do. There is really not much more I can tell you about the syndrome without examining you myself. You might consider sharing a copy of this page with your physician, though I am aware many physicians do not like the lack of peer review on the internet, but consider the page as an opening to talk about your particular case. You might also consider getting a second opinon from an ENT who specializes in the throat - a laryngologist.

Hi stringy,

I suffer from reflux and a lump in the throat is one of the symptoms. Apparently it is something to do with the acid rising up from your stomach. I freaked out about it for months and to be honest still think it is something more serious, even though my doctor told me it isn't!

Hi. I've also had this awful feeling for about two months like I've swallowed something and it's got stuck! Had loads of tests for gall stones, thyroid etc and they found nothing. I started taking a 1000mg tablet of Evening Primrose oil and a 285mg tablet of Sage Leaf in the morning after breakfast and at night after dinner within 4 days the feeling had gone completely and hasn't come back. I really hope this may be of help to some of you as it's great to get rid of the feeling.

When we hear or watch anything sad we always say we had a 'lump in our throat' don't we? well its the same thing...throat muscles tensing up gives us just this feeling. When we have constant tension it can affect all the muscles in your body including your throat.

Hi Everyone,
I have just been diagnosed with globus hystericus, the medical name for lump in the throat, this description is spot on. This feeling started around the age of 9 after I choked on a boiled sweet, but didn't connect this condition to then, I thought it was from gulping my food to fast in the past, now I'm 27 and its been diagnosed, its kind of a relief to know its an illness, and I'm not going mad, I thought it was in my mind, I'd convinced myself it was a mental state. To be told its a medical condition thats recognised as an illness, feels like a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders, someone finally believes me. I'm on antidepressants and relaxants, I can't sleep at night, due to worrying about everything, money, my children, my partner, what people think of me, do they even like me, my brain is on the go all the time, I can't switch off, so I've been given relaxants to try to help. It has helped me to sleep a bit more. I know its early days yet, and I truely hope this condition improves, I've been like this for so long now, I truely hope I can get back to being able to eat without worrying about it getting stuck in my throat, can anyone else understand what I mean when I say that? I'm glad I know what it is, and I'm glad I've found this site.

Doesn't anyone ever, EVER turn out to have this condition due to an actual foreign body in the throat, rather than anxiety?

I had been with a lump in the throat sensation for 4 months. It was a steady torture everyday and had me really down.
This is the treatment Ive come to embrace after much much trial and error and reasearch and many doctors.

Esomeprazole (supposedly pretty much the best PPI) 40 mg before breakfast (generic omeprazole, pantoprazole, etc didnt do the trick) Nixium is good also, but Esomeprazole seems to have more an effect on the throat according to my doc.

Reflucil Mospride (prokinetic to close the disfunctional sphicter, better than metroclopramide) 5 mg morning 5 mg afternoon (it was after starting this one that the problm went away completly. (ask your doctor if you merit a Nissens Fundiplication) (if you cant find mosapride in the US look for the drug that is most similar)

Probiotics (friendly germs for your stomach, (yeah its a must) ) at lunch

ranitidine ( I dont do more than 2 pills a day) at lunch and at night. (yes you can mix ..prazoles and ranitidine ;) the doctor told so, its safe.

The DIET is the most important thing though.

breakfast: Apple, Oatmeal, Honey, Chamomole tea

Lunch: chiken or fish, cooked or boiled, use no oil. Boiled veggies, beeds, spinach, reasearch which ones are less acid producing.

Supper: Oatmeal, aples, rasins. honey. chamomile tea.

Exercise

Be Patient

be on this treatment about two months, but you might need more. Never leave a healthy diet, relapses are bad, Ive suffered three, now I get the point though.

Your about to take a sip of that coke.......STOPPPPPPP

You didnt have honey handy so youll throw in some sugar........donīt

Your telling youserlf that having some popcorn at the movies is ok.....STOPPPPP

You are depressed and you are about to binge on chocolate......STOOPPP

you canīt control your hunger, your bad eating habbits, and you need someone or a greater power to keep you accountable: my facebook is Joey Kittelson add me and Ill send you an inbox every day and write on youre wall to remind you how worth it it is to be disiplined ;)

Other stuff that cause lump in throat (stress, fungus, allergies, but if you do this treatment and the symptoms go away, then you know that it was gastritis and possibly a disfuctional LES (lower esophageal sphicter)

Look up the stuff you must avoid and take it seriously.......be diciplined and you should be fine:)

God bless and get well!

p.s. my case was seriouly bad. 4 months of failiure, but God is good, medicine is awesome, theres a way out Wink"!

hi yes this is definitely something i had for 12 years until i took paroxetine. It just eased that whole problem. The same with sweating. I would come back home just from going up the street and i would be drenched in sweat from fear. I feel scared thinking about those old days and often worry about relapsing to be like that again if i try and come off medication.

Hi, I'll start off w/i have Hypothyroid and history of Hyperparathyroid tumor. I have felt like I couldnt breath when I lay down for over a year. Felt like something was cutting off air. Was told it might be asthma. put on Inhaler. Didnt' help. But I just dealt with it.
About 6 or 7 weeks ago, I started having swollen lymph nodes...doctors say, "viral", "no, its an infection", "no, its mono." " no, mono test neg, so its viral"
I have had 2 rounds of antibiotics. One round of Antiviral. Am halfway thru third round of Antibiotics (but only to keep me from getting sick while on steroids. Why am I on steroids? Last week I went in hospital because the swelling in lymph glands were extremely painful. At that time, the pain over-rid the lump blocking air. Doctors say they "think" I have a mass in front of trachea and "dont know" what is causing the Lymph to swell. So on Steroids for 3 weeks, slowly reducing amount. Swelling and pain subside, until late evening or early the next day before Steroid meds taken.
So in essence, I feel like maybe the steroids, aside from making me feel weird, are only masking whatever symptoms I am having.
I was told, while in hospital, they would do a CT scan...then they didnt do it. Was not told why they didnt' do it.
Now am waiting another week to see Endocrinologist about "mass".
Someone please give me some insight.
Oh yeah, also was told I "might" have autoimmune. Ok, there are so many of those, so which one?
And why can't I get a definitive answer from anyone?
Its become quite uncomfortable. I cough..not a productive cough. But rather like trying to clear the airway.
(on a side note, they did find "nodules" adjacent to the thyroid and "more lymph nodes than normal" that have "nodules surrounding all but one". According to Endocrinologist here in Australia they would have to bigger than 1.5 cm to biopsey or remove. But according to US Webmd site and Endocrinolist website from states, anything larger than 1cm should have biopsey.
So, how do I say??? I'm so confused and very sick and tired of being sick and tired.
Someone please help.

Thank god I have found this page UK based at that...........
Where do I start, well I am so laid back I am nearly laid down! at least I thought I was!!!
I am an early 40's bloke who is/was pretty fit cycled at least 100 miles a week or 3 x 45 minutes spinning sessions plus 3 sessions of gym work(at home cos I hate gyms!)
I eat well (mediteranean diet mostly)don't smoke and drink little alcohol...about 6 or 7 weeks ago I began getting an annoying pain under my left shoulder blade, I thought it was an old sports injury that usually 'clicks' back in when out on my road(racing) bike with dropped handle bars only this time it didn't....and then it started hurting at the front of my chest near the outside edge of my right collar bone(I smashed it years ago playing rugby...I think commutated is the correct term) which over the period of a week crept along to the inside edge of my collar bone nearest to my sturnum,so I went to the docs to and also informed her of acid reflux I had been having for a while only on and off and then mildly perhaps once a week or so, she advised physio.

Off I went and thought I wouldn't have to go to the docs again for another ten or so years, then one morning I woke up and a little later in the day I had this queesy sick type lump in my throat feeling which wouldn't go away so being a bloke I put up with it for a week thinking it would go away but it didn't, so begrudgingly it was back to the docs, this time she has a lkook in my throat and said my right tonsil was enlarged it hass been for as long as I can remember due to repeated tonsilitis as a child, so I get a referal to see the ENT specialist but it's for 6 weeks away!!! I am doing my nut because A. she mentioned a biopsy so I am thinking the big C, it is ages to wait and C. my dad died last year of lung cancer at 66 with other secondaries, he smoked and I used to on and off years ago but not much and was a welder joining all sorts of nasty metals so in my head I've defo got it...I couldn't think about anything else I lost 3/4 of a stone in 2 weeks didn't want to eat or do anything just be with those closest to me, I wasn't worried per se for myself I was worried about those whom I thought would be left behind...luckily the kids had left home and were/are more or less settled, I worried day and night about my wife coping though I know she easily would/could.

I managed to get an earlier appointment to see the ENT specialist within 2 weeks, I then one day just couldn't go in to work I just couldn't face it, this made it worse as I was at home alone all day with far too much time to dwell on things, my lovely wife came home one day and she knew somnething was wrong and kept asking and , well I just broke down in tears (first time since I was about 12 I reckon despite loads of funerals, tyhe nearest I got was seeing a tv programme anout a Romanian orphanage) .
My Wife comforted me but I was just so alone I didn't want to worry anyone so we kept it to ourselves, she took me to the emergency docs who did all sorts of prodding and poking then asked me to fill in a depression questionairre, I got a score of 13 and Citalopram, equipped with my new meds she/we decided to go away for the weekend...result me in A&E in a major UK city due to massive chest pains and panic attacks at 2.30 in the morning, I didn't want to go but my very good lady insisted I did, I got to see a doctor after 5 or so hours ands felt really bad a I got a trolley but all my wife got was an uncomfortable plastic chair in a ward stinking of fags and urine, I was given anti acid tablets due to me having a duodenal ulcer when I was about 28 from Ibuprofen probably.

I felt crap to be honest I had ruined the weekend and felt like a zombie and thought I felt even stranger than I had been, according to her I was acting strange and realistically I began to agree with her having previously worked in care for some years I thought these were side effects from the meds but wasn't sure.
We came home early but I still had the hands round my trhroat with a lump in it feeling that pretty much went at night but came back the next day as it wore on, it is was also better if I laid down.

A day after we returned just after eating a small meal of boiled fish with mash and two veg with very, very little sauce I was in agony again she called the ambulance and another night in hospital for me.
This time suspected heart attack, but luckily not they did loads of tests and it appears I am rather fit and healthy, thery took me off cItalopram and put me on Mirtrazapine, I felt better within a day or so, still had the throat lump thing but it came and went depending on the day.

I went to the ENT last week and had the camera up the nose and down the throat unusual but not that bad really...the relief though cannot be explained when she said no Cancer and the globus thing was probably more than likley down to an acid, anyway a week on I am back at work and glad of it , I know notice everything (though I was nosey before), to some extent my job doesn't help as I work in the healthcare industry and know a fair bit about cancer etc, I cant change job and I still have some more tests to have done, ie camera down and possibly up (oh matron) and also a ultrasound to see If my gall bladder is acting up as my mother is due to have hers out V soon.

Reading these pages has helped me, I have over the past 7 or so weeks become a shadow of my former self, I was never ill or bothered about anything just pottered gamely on poo pooing illness, I have been to hell and back and I am not exagerating this, it is the loneliest feeling ever even with people who care around you because ultimately it is you and you alone who will or not beat this thing whatever that thing is!, that's what I thought but after reading others experiences and getting the all clear last week I have begun to come out of the other side of this 'low mood' related anxiety/globus thing, hopefully it will go away soon and never return, thank you for sharing your experiences.

Hi mate

Sounds like you are over the worst :yesyes: I can relate to alot of the above and things do start to get back to normal although i do think perhaps we are never the same person again , not in a bad way but just more aware of our own mortality and appreciate things more.
The lump in the throat feeling can also be anxiety causeing the throat muscles to tighten . I,ve had the globus feeling in my back aswell as throat it still comes and goes but is deffo much much better and most days its gone now .

Take care

Yes I am starting to feel ok in myself and putting weight back on, I can now fit back into some of my jeans again.
The muscles in my neck were so tight with tension that they were giving me tension headaches and even turning my head hurt this was accompanied by a clicking/grating sound that only I could hear inside my head, happy to say this has all but gone now.
As you say you come out I think a better person in some ways definately aware of your own mortality anb far more thankful for things...gone is the sad weekly chore of hoping to win the lottery now all I want is good health for as long as possible!

deangraziosi go and see your doctor to be on safe side probaly and inner ear infection or something similar, ...I have now been for a ultrasound scan of my abdomen to see if any gall stones present, the lady who was doing the scan said she couldn't see any or anything at all to cause concern in my abdominal area front or back which is a BIG plus as far as I am concerned.
I still have the throat thing on and off some days it's worse than others so it will be back to the docs I guess when the scan results arrive there to discuss further tests?
Currently getting a whistleing in my left ear thats gets worse as the day goes on though I have been having it on and off for a year or two along with reduced hearing in that ear gueesing it's from 16 years of engineering using angle grinders etc also been feeling sick on and off for few days but there are bugs going round so it's hard to know if it's the meds, a bug or the globus thing, but still feeling better than a few weeks ago.

Hi All,
Whilst searching online I came across this site and found it very interesting so I had to regsiter. As like others on here I have similar conditions in my throat, which has lasted a few months following a viral - triggered by post nasal drip at the back :lac:.

What would be beneficial if we could list our conditions / treatments and possibly see some kind of pattern :)

Endoscopy result: stomach lining mildly inflammed
My left ear always bunged up & itchy
Bloated most of the times
Pins and needle feeling on my right hand side / mid of back (when sat driving)
Slight increase in weight
Waistline tense if sat too for long
My stomach issue began by taking Ibuprofen and the pain still exists. Discomfort pains are usually around my middle of the rib where they meet and to the right (gall bladder area).

My Dr. has requested to have an ultrasound done on my Gall Bladder / Pancrease area and kidneys. I've had a number of blood tests done and they all have come out clear.

I have now started to take vinegar mixed with water and that seems to relax me and lift my mood as my throat makes me feel 'slow like' and moody. Some other pointers below:

Chocs make my throat worse
Green Tea helps
Vicks balm before sleep relaxes muscles
I've even used Deep Heat on my neck :whistles:
Would be good to hear from others and share your tips. Hopefully some Dr will crack it!! :shades:

And PLEASE come back if you have resolved your issues :hugs:

mel2 - your post had me laughing :) I bet that will help a lot!

I'm brand new here and been suffering with health anxiety since my dad died. I think it brought on GERD / acid reflux, which has been controlled by PPIs for years. But the last few months i've been getting aches and pains. Now the last week, despite no real reflux I've started getting a lump in my throat. My first google led me straight here and it sounds exactly the same.

:yesyes:Welcome to the forum mate .

Mine still comes and goes after 7 months , its worse in the morning , i know its anxiety as its not there all the time . Might be worth you going to the DR,s for a check up anyway , everytime i went the reasurance that it was just anxiety made the swallowing issue subside . I can sort of control it myself now by ignoreing it !

Hope it goes away soon :D

Got a Cure Guys My doctor found it out Domperidon tablets, Had it for 2 years its not stress, it is not acid reflux Now, It is however damage to your esophagus done by previous acid reflux. It has damaged your nerves and muscles in the bottom of esophagus or stomach and it struggles to push food through, some foods cause it to spazm making the food stuck and causes your throat to feel tight, coffee is the worst or tea, sets mine off. Here is how you get Rid of the lump in your throat. ASK YOUR DOCTOR For 10mg of Domperidon, 2 tablets takes it away. Hope it helps NOT in USA the med but in UK you can get it. Its under a med that helps motion sickness if that helps in USA but UK you get it fine. Drove me crazy thought I had cancer and thyroid problems a 300 pack, 2 pounds it cost?. drink warm water only :yesyes:no cold or hot.

Ok guys I am still here just thought I'd return and share a few things with you...ok since I last posted I have had a full ultrasound scan and nothing showed up, had the camera down throat and into stomach all appears fine, they took some samples but reassured just routine and everyone confirmed this, my Consultant said she saw absolutely nothing at all, having the camera down even with the anesthetic spray was bloody awful I felt violated but was well cool(well I did have a nice nurse at each end and a nice lady consultant doing the procedure so didn't want to let the side down chaps!)

just waiting for results which take about 4-6 weeks but told all looks absolutely fine...have already got next appointement booked with consultant...I have about 2 or 3 very good days in every week or so...sometimes I even feel 'normal' whatever thast is instead of just a walking digestive system!
I have noticed that I occassionsaly get a break out of acne on the back of my shoulders every few weeks not bad really but worth noticing and I reckon could be from the PPI's (Lansoprozole if I spelt it right)
still taking the Mitrazapine(correct spelling) for help sleeping which zonks me out within 1 hour of taking it.
I did notice at the start of all this a few ltiny 'blisters' on the side of a couple of finger joints that then dried up and peeled...forgot about those they came back and went again about two montha ago also this coincided with last 'bad attack' which lasted a week or so without letup.

Mostly I feel ok and 'stress'(not that I ever really feel stressed) does seem to make it worse, I give out presentations in my job and really enjoy doing them but it is a bit of a performance a routine if you like and the ups and downs of the adreneline may make it worse?
But at present life is feeling pretty good and hopefuylly getting better.

Hi all I've been reading this thread with some interest.
I have had this problem for about the last six months with a break of about a month in the middle.
The doctors have told me that it could be a number of things: stress, acid reflux, mucus moving down the back of the throat.
I do suffer from acid reflux and have a stuffy nose almost constantly.
The things that I have found to help (not instant relief) have been:
taking gaviscon every day, if I forget to take it the problem is noticeably worse.
Using a nasal spray like beconaise, helps with the mucus.
Most of all giving up smoking, I managed this for about a month, and amazingly my symptoms disappeared. The doctors say that smoking causes acid build up in the stomach and even if you don't get any reflux the vapors can cause the feeling of a lump. Obviously there was less mucus also when I was not smoking. I have since started smoking again and the symptoms appeared again after about two days. Need to try and give up again.
For a bit of instant relief I find going out for a run is great, a bit fresh air and enough effort that i have to concentrate on only running soon helps the symptoms temporarily.
Hope this can help anyone.

This thread has been a great help. I have been really struggling for the last couple of weeks. I had my tonsils removed a couple of weeks ago and it wasn't as bad as i expected but the swallowing problem i had before it has got far worse in the last few weeks and especially in the last few days. Keep thinking i have a lump in my throat and bringing up spit/phelgm to swallow it down. At it's worst i must be swallowing every 15-20 seconds, it is driving me crazy! Any suggestions??

Hi I have never had this symptom before now. Began a few days ago but it is worse tonight than ever. Feel like I have the start of a cold so throat is sore, but just feel like Im being strangled and something is stuck in my throat like my voice box is being squeezed. I have other posts on here and it all makes sense. And yet Im still questioning it grrrrr!

Have taken nurofen and an antihistamine just in cases, but frightened my throat is going to close.

Come on be logical.

Any one have any ideas of anything to relieve it a little or is it something you just put up with?

Thanks for reading Any advice welcome

I am in the lump in throat gang too :(

It comes and goes, also in the ''My tongue is too big for my mouth'' gang..also the ''feels like under my chin is cramping gang'' All down to focusing in on it. Distraction is key here! Easy said!

I have had this lump in the throat feeling for about 1.5 years now,and had all the tests done as follows, camera through my nose-bariums swallow-numerous blood tests, then finally a ultrasound scan,it was in the ultrasound scan that showed nodules, which the doc said wasn't harmful and shouldn't affect me,but they did...so they just let me suffer for all this period,i done a bit of googling and found diazapam helps with muscle spasms,so i went to see my doc,and told him this could help my throat,he agreed,so i took the very 1st dose 5mg,and omg i am in so much relief,it has made almost 90% difference, and i can lay or lean back and not get this nasty choking feeling which made my life hell for all this time.
I am on my 3rd day now,and i am so much relaxed, and the tight feeling as almost gone. :hugs:

I'm getting this weird feeling like I got something in my throat and it worries me greatly

But it doesn't last forever as it goes away after a while but then randomly comes back

I can swallow fine and breathe well but I'm just scared of why I get this feeling? Am I getting a illness? Is my tubes in my throat closing because of my fat? )Yes I'm a little overweight by the way) Am I getting a disease or something?

Please answer me, Please!
