WHAT IS SELF ESTEEM?

Your self esteem is the level of belief that you have in yourself and of how much you like and accept yourself.
self esteem is often linked with the way you see yourself
(your self image) and is related to concepts such as how much respect you have for yourself (your self respect).
Self esteem goes far beyond just your skills and abilities. We dont choose our physical make-up, and have not necessarily chosen the roles we have in our lives.
Therfore ourapperance and our roles in life are often not a true representation of us as a unique person.
Self esteem plays a vital part in how you live your life.
It effects the level of satisfaction and joy you experiance in working ,learning and playing. However your level of self esteem is variable. It changes as you feel happier in yourself, and is effected by how other respond to you.
It can be raised by giving yourself appreciation and by recieving recognition and praise from others.
Having a high level of self esteem does not mean that you are a perfect person with no room for change or review. Neither does it mean that to have a good self esteem you have to be perfect.
You can still make mistakes, but at least you will not feel destroyed when you do !

Just to let you know that Trac has written a page on this for the new website so that will be making an appearance soon as well.

Perhaps we can combine bits from both this topic and what Trac has written.

Great Idea Nicola :D . The more we understand self esteem the better. When my cbt booked me in for self esteem classes I was a bit annoyed, because I thought "I suffer panic attacks , "Not" low self esteem"
how wrong was I ??? [:I]

If we have low self esteem, we.....

have difficulty acknowledging our success
take any mistake as evidence of inadequacy
find it difficult to tolerate conflict
feel powerless to influence our future (things just happen to me)
find it difficult to challange other people
exaggerate our weaknesses and ignor our strengths, or exaggerate our abillities by boasting/bragging.
find it difficult to accept ourself.
are dissatisfied with our personal appearance
often give our needs low priority
tend to get stuck in unsatisfactory jobs, roles or relashionships
tend to bottle things up
find it difficult to use our time satisfactorily
may feel unsafe in intamate relationships
lack assertion skills
neglect our health or personal appearance
fidn it difficult to maintain a balance of activities

Nicola, I have just read thru my self esteem folder and no where does it say that its copyrighted, so I dont know why you cant copy it ?

After all , if it can help people it would maybe take the burden off the NHS.

HOW THOUGHTS EFFECT SELF ESTEEM
----------------------------------------

We all talk to ourselves - a large percentage of our thoughts is made up of self talk.We both compliment and criticise ourselves.
Positive self talk can help raise and maintain self esteem.
However if you have low self esteem, you are more likely to be self critical.
These critical ,negative thoughts;

May be AUTOMATIC - they just pop into your head with no effort on
your part.
Are often UNHELPFUL - They knock your self esteem.

Are DISTORTED - They dont fit the facts.

Often seem PLAUSIBLE - It doesnt occur to you to question them.

May be UNCHALLENGED - these thoughts and beliefs have been with you for years.

I visited a small shop in a tourist area yesturday,
asked the lady if she would like me to bring my jewellery in to show her,
at first she said no but I kept talking her into it lol (self esteem).

Anyway in the end we got on together just fine and she said she will take a look at it .....[Yeah!]

When we were at the end of our discussion, a lady came into the shop who I know, it was then I felt nervous and left the shop quickly.

still i did it [:P]
