View Full Version : Might be having an MRI scan on my knee tomorrow, terrified!

I've had knee pain for a while now, had an x ray done and nothing showed up so GP has got me an appointment with a consult/specialist at the hospital.
He mentioned that I may be having an MRI scan, if that's the case does my whole body have to go in? Or just my leg?

I've heard it's really loud and scary inside and I will feel very claustrophobic.

Hi for your knee it will just be your legs going in. The machine does clunk a little as it has large magnets moving around but you will have headphones on with music playing you can take a cd in and ask them to play it if you like

Good luck for tomorrow

I had my first MRI a few months ago.. I'd refused one last year because I was scared, like you. But it was fine, honestly. As Purgatory said above, take one of your favourite cds with you - I took Coldplay as I find that one quite relaxing. It does bang, but you get used to it, and if you just close your eyes & listen to your music, it's really not so bad.

I took a 2mg diazepam about half an hour before, which helped too.

Good luck :)

Thanks guys, so you don't think my whole body will go in then?

Also would they say on the letter if I was having an MRI? Because it doesn't actually say, just a consultation.

Hi now if it was just the knee then only your legs would go in...

And also yeah if it was for a MRI it would say on the letter as most MRI's are done in a different part of the hospital and also can take weeks if not months for an appointment... So I would say it is just to see the consultant and then he/she will refer you for a mri if needed

Hi i agree there would be no need to put you in head first, so yes legs first, my dad had an mri on his leg and he went in feet first so good luck you will be fine, you will wonder what you were worried about!! blessings
