It could be gout which is very common in men your dad's age. This is not serious and can be controlled with diet and medication. He should see the doctor who can confirm it.

One of our friends had the same last week, his knee was really swollen and painful. He went to the doctors and it is gout.

Gout = OUCHIE!

I get it in my left foot (ankle and big toe) due to the chemo treatment. It's excruciating!

Fortunately, they have meds that take care of it in a jiffy.

Good luck!

Yep sounds like gout I have had that before in my right foot.

If he finds it painfull a little tip for you get some ibuprofen gel and deep heat and mix equal amounts into a paste and apply it to the are it will take the pain away quick and reduce the swelling.

It does 2 things gives rapid heat to the area and also kills the pain. And then to make sure put a bandage around the are helps with the treatment.

Massaging it will also help.

Ohhhh noooo.... ain't no touching this guy when it hits me! It hurts to wear a slipper let alone anything else. Heat, analgesic gels/cream, ibuprofen or prescription drugs are the ticket.

Gentle massage breaks down the uric acid crystals. I don't mean putting pressure on, just very gentle massage.

Funny how the first thing I thought was 'cancer'

Hi guys.
His really sturggling today.
Had to abandon his post round today (his a postman) I also had to out his socks on for him as he couldn't bend down. Not so much pain all the time just some but he can't bend it,
Does that still sound like gout?

Hopefully he will get it sorted then. He will probably need blood tests.

Thanks :(
His really sturggling to walk up the stairs.
Because its like a big lump. I imagine it being cancer

Well stop imagining things because it isn't. Cancer wouldn't have gone into a big lump as quick as that but gout or bursitis would and neither of those are serious and can be treated so stop worrying. The doctor will sort him on Monday.

Thanks Annie,
His killing him self though.

He drinks 3-4 beers a night at home plus sneaks wine in and drinks it during the day.
Just caught him now, heard the bottle being undone so went into his room saying do you have my black top and his all flushed and trying to hide something behind his back.
Thinks I'm bloody stupid :(
I don't reckon he has long to live.
Heart attack, strokes, cancer etc etc. :(

Beer is one of the biggest triggers for gout.

Wow I didn't know that as I havnt googled.
Probably is gout then. Hopefully this can convince him to cut down on his alcohol intake.
I hope the doc asks him if he drinks. :)

The doctor will probably advise him to cut down if it is gout. He needs to drink plenty of water.
