Hi everyone. I'm new to this but am desperate to talk with someone who knows what it's like. I've always been quite an anxious person but earlier this year, i started to suffer with intrusive thoughts, although at the time i didn't know what it was and was very scared and thought i was going mad. The thoughts were and still are beyond horrible and about someone i care about greatly. I am seeing a counsellor/psychotherapist but just feel like I'm not really getting any better and just wish the thoughts would go away. I'm scared of everything, mainly because i think it will trigger new thoughts or even the anxiety of getting the thoughts. i have a constant background feeling of dread. I just wish it would all go away and i would feel happy. I would be really grateful for any advice ... x

Hi Vix,
I sympathize with your delimna. A month ago I was so depressed and having panic attacks that I could not shake the feeling of dread for anything. I raise three young granddaughers and all I could think about is how much better off we would all be if this life was just over. I am a Christian and I do believe we will go to heaven so I just kept obsessing over it and wishing it would just happen; the whole armagadeon and return of Christ. I am not suicidal, so all I could do was "hope" we would all die together now. Now I realize just how morbid those thoughts are, but then....it seemed like the only solution to my anxiety.
I made an immediate appointment with a brand new psychiatrist and he put me on Lithium and Seroquel. That was last Monday and I can't tell you how much better I feel already. I actually went Trick or Treating last night with the kids and several neighbors, and had fun!
My point is Vix, thoughts are just thoughts. If you are reaching out to people here then you are taking your first steps toward help. This site is great and the people here are wonderful.
Keep your head up!

Hiya vix,
firstly let me say a big welcome. Im sure youl get loads of help, understanding and advice from this site.
The main thing to realise is that your not going mad and that the majority of people suffer with these irrational thoughts. Ive had them for years, but worried about them cus i thought i was the only one that had them.
Ive got a very very close friend whose highly intelligent that told me when i started suffering from panic and anxiety that shes also suffered.
She also told me about the irrational thoughts shed had.
Knowing that shed been thru similar to what i was going thru really helped and made me realise that i wasnt really going out of my mind and it was just due to stress and anxiety.
I really hope that this has helped you.

Take care

hi Vix welcome along, I sort of know how you feel, one way i recently learned how to deal with unwanted thoughts was to think of the thoughts as being said by someone you dont like. Then, keep telling yourself you dont want to listen to that voice and start to ignore it from time to time, and then soon enough you the voice will start to disappear. Hopefully this will help you as it has helped me. Iam an Agoraphobic and because I have started to not listened to the voice in my head, i have slowly started to come over my phobia.

Thanks to all of you - it's such a relief when you know you're not the only one. I don't know anyone who has experienced anything similar (actually i haven't spoken to many people for fear of scaring them too or them thinking i'm mad) so it's great to find this chat room. The links were useful so thanx for those.
