View Full Version : SHOULD I GIVE UP ALCOHOL?

I've had anxiety for about 8 or 9 years, I've had my really bad patches in the past but still not 100%, I would say i'm about 80% anxiety and panic attack free, The only time I get anxiety is in the aftermath of alcohol.

I rarely drink a large amount but got carried away on Sunday night past and was completely trollied, I felt the after affects on Monday and Tuesday, I didn't have a hangover, It was pure anxiety, I thought I was going crazy at one point, I just paced around the room completely adjitated and unable to sit at peace.

As mentioned I rarely drink a large amount, at weekends I'd usually have about 4 pints on Fri and Sat nites while out for a meal or at the local etc, So my question is will giving it up all together actually do any good? I've been drinking this amount for the past 10 years and never drink during the week so I haven't got a problem, will giving it up stop my anxiety all together or will I just be depriving myself of any sort of social life??

It will do your health good and yes hangovers are bad for anxiety.

There is no guarantee that giving up completely will cure your anxiety UNLESS you only get it after drinking.

Ahh ok in that case I would cut it out and see how it goes.

Got to be worth it hasn't it?

I would say that you do have a problem, as drinking ,whatever amount makes you anxious. you do,nt have to drink alcohol to have a social life. try it for a while and see what happens. do,nt get me wrong i like a drink ,but your asking the question.[?]

Yes hence why I only drink at the weekends and it has to be in the night time at weekends, I do enjoy a drink, especially on a fri night after work with my work mates, its noting to do with the social side of things on a Fri night, we all just like to let out hair down and have a drink so giving this up will really annoy me as we all look forward to it all week,

I may be wrong but it seems to be the foggy/spacey type thing that occurs with a hangover that seems to set of the anxiety and panic attacks

I would say that its not a problem unless you are waking up the next day and worrying, like you say getting anxious. Alcohol makes me feel that way too the next day but god knows what i would do without it. Maybe i do have a problem and use it as a form of relaxation as i dont take meds, i know its not the answer and will have to start to cut down soon. I feel ok if i only have a few glasses but any more than that and i feel full of anxiety the next day!

I find on a Sat i'm usually not to bad as I be out and about which distracts me. Suns are worse, Sundays are a crappy old day anyway

I recently cut waaaay back on my alcohol consumption and although it has actually made my anxiety worse, I think it was the right thing to do. I was self-medicating with the booze - 2 or 3 every night. Never a hangover or a missed day of work, but I just didn't think it was a good course to set myself on, so now I might have one or two on a friday or Saturday, but that's all. So my point it, it's probably a good idea to quit, but you may find that it makes matters worse in the anxiety department... I say just tough it out. Well, that's the course I'm taking, anyway.

Cheers & good luck!

creatrix - i agree with you totally. A few a night helps me greatly but i realise its the wrong path to take. I have just packed up the fags (5 weeks) which i never thought id do, so one step at a time and next i plan to follow your footsteps with the booze!

its like the oasis song [ciggarettes and alchahol] i used to love them both but health anxiety over cancer finally made me give up the fags 18months ago as for the booze if im down and anxious then even a couple of beers or glasses of wine will cause insomnia and panic in me but if ive been chilled out for a couple of days then a few drinks are ok with me

Give it up today. Works wonders when you do.
I went from 3 cartons a week to 6 cans a year

Don't believe everything you think.

Alcohol is a depressant. It makes you feel better at the time but when the 'happy' effects wear off it can make you more depressed and anxious than before. I'd try to give up for a while and see how it goes.

I'm being a total hypocrite cos I love a coupla pints occasionally, like every night lol
