If you're saying you have asthma and smoke 3 packs a day, the writing is on the wall. Take that and your post on drinking 5 pints a day and there are no words that say enough concerning this.

Now, concerning e-cigs. I "was" a smoker. I had oral cancer. I quit tobacco and did so in short order with the help of e-cigs.

All I can say is good luck!

Jay I quit, cold, two years ago. I was never any good at it, sometimes I smoked for six or seven years, then I'd just stop for a few. At times I was a lightweight smoker, other times heavier. I got sick of them so I stopped - and no, it wasn't easy. I just refused to pick up another.

Anyway - ecigs. My husband uses one. He's been a lifelong heavy smoker, no qualms about what he does, and willing to pay the piper if that's his 'lot'. However as a non-smoker his mill chimney impression was hard after I stopped as I became sensitive to the smoke. That's when he tried an ecig.

He'd tell you to give them a go. Remember he was a confirmed smoker of cigarettes, and having given the vapour version a go, he now wouldn't smoke anything else. He says they're cheaper, socially more acceptable, and healthier (of course).

It is never too late to stop, never. Good luck.

My husband is using an e-cig to help him quit. He found the transition from cigarettes to e-cig pretty straight forward. It's the quitting of the e-cig that's goign to be the hard thing, but I think it's a good compromise for now. He can control how much nicotine he is getting and plans to slowly reduce it down until he's not getting any.

I smoked 40 a day for 16 years.

I quit two years ago with an e-cig.

Don't bother with the ones that look like ciggies, you want the ones that you can fill with juice yourself.

Like this.

I have found that mostly yes it's accepted, but you have to respect individual organisations' or people's requests to put it away if asked.. Not everyone understands the vapour is harmless, and hospitals in particular regard e-cigs as being against their no smoking policy.

I've used mine in coffee bars, pubs, shopping centres etc with no problem.

And I would definitely recommend them as a way to stop smoking normal cigs. Look around though before you buy the full kit from any company, the prices vary greatly, as do the ranges of nicotine levels available.

Hi Jay,

I quit 7 weeks ago. I had smoked since the age of 14 (now 48) and smoked about 20 aday. I am using the Nicorette mouth spray as it gives you an instant hit when you have a craving. For me quitting is about two things 1) the habit and 2) the nicotine withdrawal.

I think I will always be a "smoker" I am just "not smoking at the moment" and hope to be saying that forever.

Good luck

Jay hon, first of all you CAN quit.

I quit about 3 months ago now using the Allan Carr easy way to stop smoking book and my fear of lung cancer so I haven't used NRT. I Feel bloody brilliant.

However, I have a good friend who started smoking at 12 and gave up 6 months ago aged 55 using an e-cig and she swears by them and hasn't touched a cigarette since. She uses it everywhere, even on the bus!

So as well as being quite a good comedian he also specialises in smoking cessation? Is there no end to that man's talents? :)
