Carol, I read the description of two drummers being out of sync and it really amused me, and reassured me about my palpitations. They are nothing to worry about even if they are around a lot. Its just a reaction to the adrenaline which we produce when anxious.

I have them about 3 times a day, and most often when I'm drifting off into sleep. It feels really weird so I always sit up and set myself into panic. Palpitations are common and completely harmless though.

I know every one says they are harmless but its so scary when you get them all the time. I feel they have really knocked my confidence. I just think why are they happening! What if something is really wrong!

Hi Carol, yep I get these all the time too, have done for 7 years or so now!

I too have had tests done and all have said nothing to worry about, but you and I know thats it much easier said than done! Out of all the symptoms I have had over the years this has been the most alarming, I get them too when I am not even feeling stressed. I think it is because we are so scared of them thats why we notice them all the time as I don't know about you, but I really notice them more when I am not really doing much as opposed to when I am occupied?

Hi Carol
I have had missed heartbeats since1991. Try a simple antacid like Gaviscon or alka seltzer. I found that they help a lot. If it does you need to examine your eating habits. If it works I will tell you more. JBhodgki

Hi please tell me more i have always thought that mine are some how linked to my stomach but doctors do not!

Hi Cazza, no my Gp has never been really helpful in giving me ways of dealing with them, other than the usual " they are nothing to worry about" but thats it. Oh and stopping caffiene, alcohol and other such stimulants.

I too think there is some kind of link with these beats and the stomach/oesophagus as I am used to getting really horrible flutters/missed beats after or whilst eating, in fact I have just had that a little while ago today which has thrown me into panic stations, appointment made with doctor for today already...hand attached to neck checking pulse! I am out of control as far as these beats are concerned and I really don't know how much more I can take. I do get these beats alot and yes they do make me catch my breath, the episode I just had
( whilst I was eating my sandwich) literally I jumped out of my seat, coughed 3-4 times very forcefully and paniced like mad, went really dizzy, paced around the room 5-6 times and then cried! See how crazy these make me. Sound familiar to anyone?

Hi again, have you noticed and improvement since your appointment for the 24 holter monitor came through, I only ask as mine got a little better when I realised people were taking me seriously and further tests would be carried out.
I have had the 24 hour tape done twice now and both times left me feeling a little confused as I had to record the time and what I was doing when the beats occured on a A4 piece of paper and hand it in with the monitor when I had finished - I did this and all the times I was noting down I was feeling the missed beats the doctors said there was nothing happening - that said they did pick up benign ectopics throughout the test - how ever not all the times when I had thought I had felt them.....hence why I was so confused - what was it I was feeling then if it was not my heartbeat? Anyway you are right when you say it helps to talk to others about this, could'nt agree more. Your test will come round very quickly and the results will too and hopefully that will ease your mind a little and anyway no news is really good news after these tests as if they were really worried about anything they would be in touch a lot sooner!

Hi cazza
My palpitations are definitely tied to stomach problems. My doctor wouldn't believe me either, but I did get him to prescribe a medecine that inhibits acid formation in the stomach. It hasn't been a cure but it certainly helps. It's primary use is in problems like stomach ulcers etc. It is called Parriet, and certainly does some good, when combined with sensible eating.
Hope this helps.
Try simple antacids, when you are having a problem.
Regards JBHodgki.
