View Full Version : Citalopram and erection 'problems'

It's a bit delicate ......... but as a side effect of Citalopram can I ask if I'm the only bloke out there on the medication who has what can be interpreted as either a blessing or an embarrassing 'downside' (wrong word!) to the tablets?

I find since I've been on Citalopram I get VERY strong erections and take forever to reach ejaculation. Doesn't sound like a complaint does it? My wife's delighted!! However, 'Good Wood' if fine if the time's right ....... not if you're wearing shorts in Tesco!!!

When the missus is wearing the old lace it's great, best sex ever, but when you're sitting at your desk, or standing at a bar, or watching your son play football, the last thing you want is the old boy putting in an appearance.

I'd bring it to my GP's attention but she's an attractive young woman in her 20's and I'm worried about the unexpected unexpectedly putting in an appearance when I'm explaining the unexpected to her!!

Anyone else 'suffer' similar reactions to Citalopram?

Happiness and light to you all,
'Chopper'

I saw her once, one little while, and then no more:
’Twas Eden’s light on Earth a while, and then no more.
Amid the throng she passed along the meadow-floor:
Spring seemed to smile on Earth awhile, and then no more;
But whence she came, which way she went, what garb she wore
I noted not; I gazed a while, and then no more!

Im on citalopram and have lost my sex drive totally:(so I think it very well could be your meds.

Well done Chopper, great posting, not many men are able to talk as openly about sex...or any other emotional stuff for that matter.

Guy on 20mg Cita/day talking here so........for me the issue isn't erctile, it's can't be bothered...really gone off sex...which is a pain as I used to have a pretty high drive....and that wasn't somewhere to put the car.

Just a thought, you haven't picked up some old boys viagra be mistake!!

Cheers

Iain

ps..did the name "Chopper" come before or after the meds?????

pps..see when guys do talk sex they have to snigger about it!!

Nice post Iain!

'Chopper's a long established nickname - think big(ish) bloke, martial artist, weight trainer, shaven head, loads of tattoos, bit of a reputation, Mark Brandon Read!

I don't mind the delayed ejaculation (my GP advises that Citalopram is often actually prescribed for premature ejaculation) and at the right time it's great.[Wow!] It's the unexpected appearance of 'The Big Fella' that's embarrassing![8)]

With the increase to 40mg a day I'm wondering if I'm going to increase my girth and stamina[:I] or suffer the ultimate embarrassment, named after that famous Centurion, 'Limpus Dickus'!! Sorry!!!

Happiness and light to you all,
'Chopper'

Ps. If the old boys I socialise with knew of this particualr side effect I could make a fortune as a dealer in Citalopram!!!!!

hi
from a woman whose boyfriend had the same problems as yours - it was a bloody nightmare!!!!!!!!

joking aside - he did get his meds changed to another brand and the problem did subside.

perhaps try discussing with your gp - he will have heard worse so dont be too worried about it.

Shell,

Trust me, 'The Missus' has never had it so good!

The sex is fantastic (I won't go into details![}:)]) but can you imagine queing at the till in Sainsbury's and suddenly finding an extra butternut squash in your pants?!![Wow!]

That's the embarrassing thing, I feel like a 13 year old again - not knowing when the old fella is going to put in an appearance!!

Don't get me wrong, everything works well when I want it to - on demand even - but having to clutch a packet of frozen peas to your groin in Tesco is a scenario I'd rather avoid!!

I shouldnt laugh at your predicament because my worst nightmare is humiliatings panics in a sainsburys shopping queue, but as a person with a warped humour and a vivid imagination the tears that welled in my eyes imagining you in the freezer dept standing inside a deep freeze praying for deflation had me in stitches.

I am not a man, but have been on citalopram for four years now and i know it can have some bizarre effects.

I spent 2 years with no libido, but in the last two years it has taken a dramatic turn around, it is now failing in the anxiety dept but does wonders for other areas.

I think that this is just a typical side affect amongst many others but you may be able to counteract it with something like diazepam when you go out which does tend to relax muscles and could be oh huge help to you.

I really do wish you luck !! and also agree with shell as well. lol

Seriously - thank you Citalopram.

I'm having a similar problem...
I'm 'frisky' all the time. I've only been on 10mg for a week now, but i've been jumping on my girlfriend 3, 4 times a day.

I think we need to open a club or something.

Hi All
I take 20mg Citallopram a day and i suffer the same issues as Chopper. I can usually control the unwanted erections but the 'wood is good'. My girlfriend is very pleased, and i think becoming increasingly tired of my constant advances.
.
Im reply to Gucci, i was originally put on fluoxtine and really didnt get on with it, although thats not to say it wont work for others. To be fair i had a hard (no pun intended) time getting on Citalopram but am ok with it now.

Glad its not just me who has this side effect!!

The problems i encountered with gaining, maintaining and utilising my erection did subside after several months. I guess it's different for everyone. Delayed climax was a major problem, caused a lot of worry. I thought i was broken.

I am a smoker too.
Is it dangerous to smoke with an erection.[:I]

Hi everyone,

I'm on Citalopram 20mg daily too. I can echo the problems with delayed climax, although over the past 3 months it appears to be less of a problem than it was.

Good things come to those who wait.... alledgedly!!!

Well, how can we explain 'selective' side-effects?

I've been feeling more like my old self for the last 6 to 7 weeks now, no shakes, no twitches, no anxiety whatsoever, no panic, breathing steady and shallow, no sweats, comfortable in social situations again, no teeth grinding, no hand wringing, no dizzy spells, no balance problems, sleeping well ..... everything seems to have gone back to 'pre-episode' status ....... with one noticeable exception![:I]

'The Old Boy' still puts in the odd unexpected appearance at the most inconvenient of times but when 'on parade' he doesn't disappoint and the aerobic benefits are great! My wife thinks she's married to a toy boy not a 41 year old! If only she were 19 again!!;)

Erectile Dysfunction (inability to sustain erection) is a very common disorder which most men face in there life at some stage for one reason or the other like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, fatigue, stress, physical injuries, certain medication, smoking and alcohol consumption. The exact reason behind your problem can only be judged by a specialist and only then one should use the medicines prescribed. You can have the information on ED and ED related drugs (Viagra, Levitra and Cialis) on http://www.levitrabliss.com Levitra is a FDA approved drug and is used to cure erectile dysfunction in male. This medicine helps in treating impotency and ED disorders in men suffering from risky medical conditions like high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes. This is the reason why this medicine is being preferred over other impotency medicines. But the results and side effects may vary from person to person so it’s advisable to use this medicine in accordance with the instructions of the physician.

I too am experiencing alot of woody moments on Citalopram...

I'm only on 20mg, but the effects on my manhood is starting to worry me, I don't even need to be thinking of sex.......it just bursts into life and once it has started to grow the awareness of it makes it even *harder* to get rid..

Not sure if I should mention it to my GP/Physciatrist - i'd feel like a right pleb.

Most men on anti depressants cant even raise a smile let alone anything else.
Are you sure its the citalopram doing it? Maybe theres another reason for the extra sex drive. How were you before you took the citalopram?
Anyway nice to hear youre feeling better on them and be brave and discuss it with your GP. Again youre lucky to have an attractive one, mine's like the back end of a bus. Even if I had an erection it would soon slump when I see her lol.

Good luck

Spoke to my phsyciatrist about this yesterday.

She got a text book out and explained that citalopram can effect men in two very different ways.

Either:-

Men will find it hard to perform.

Men will find they perform without wanting to perform.

Hey there,

Found this forum while looking for answers to my problems!!

Sorry for you Chopper, but all I can say is I wish!

I've been on 20mg of Citalopram for only a week now, and I'm affected in the opposite way already! The sweats have started too!

This is now my 3rd go on Pram, and had the same issues both times before of lack of sex drive. But last times I was single, as expected being so bloody low, depressed and moody, but this time I've just got into a relationship with a top lass.
I met her the day before I met the doc, and that night although I was a total gentleman, I could have had her swing off it. I'm 38, and have always been quite sexual, other than too much booze I've never suffered from any problems with my 'wood'
I'm now so bloody worried that if I can't give what she's now really wanting then I'm going to be dumped and find myself even lower than I already am.

Sorry for the details everyone, but I'm looking for help and/or advice, so why not?
We've met up lots in the last week, been intimate plenty, but I'm just not able to keep it up, and I worry when I do that I'm not going to 'finish' either.
Point is I've worked her into a frenzy, she's gagging, and if I don't perform I fear for the outcome.

I trust she's nice enough to not dump me over that, but hey, if I wasn't a worrier then I'd not be on Pram would I?

Holy cow! what a nightmare!

Yeah, gone from being depressed and anxious 24/7 to feeling what it's like to be a `normal' person. Can go out in public without panicing `much', greatly reduced thoughts of negativity towards self. I had a superhigh sex drive before CIT - it vanished for the first 4 months taking 20mg - then boom - it's back. Started dating and met a great girl, only problem is I can't ejaculate, must have had sex between 30 and 40 times in four days - she is asking questions - `saying I can't be normal' `why is it always erect' - nice problem to have - but it's still a problem.

But I'll tell you something - it's great having a problem like this, it's trivial nonsense compared to the soul destroying days, weeks, months and years I've had without Citalopram.

Take care all

I have had problems for a month or so with a very highly increased sex drive. This coincides with a big confidence boost caused by hypnotherapy, so I can't say for certain what has actually caused it. It's a pity I am single at this moment in time, I'd be like a never-ending whirlwind in the sack! ;)

Hi Chopper,

I don't know if it's just me (I've never liked men) but I can't see this as a problem. I know you say you also don't think it's a problem thats why you put it in inverted commas and that your wife is appreciative of the change but what annoys me is that you go on to speak about your G.P.

Surely everyone knows you can change your G.P easily, even on the same day if you really have to. You say she's a pert 20, nubile and that may cause you to get hard in her presence but it's almost like being tied down 'against your will' by a sexy elf.

Sorry to not be 100% sympathic but I'm just being honest, I'm sure other women don't see it the way I do but it's almost like your secretly loving every hard cock encounter.

Saying that when I was on Flueoxtine I could pleasure myself all day (I'm single) and never actually come and even then it was weak.

Hi Chopper,

Oddly enough i'd been having problems sustaining erections recently so when the side effect you mentioned started happening to me i was delighted, and still am. ;-)

I'm not getting into trouble in supermarkets though, probably cause i'm only on 10mg, so i can't completely empathise with you on that point.

Maybe just try thinking of Michael Heseltine, or someone equally unattractive, naked. I know that would help me with an unexpected appearance of the wee man.

Most of you are lucky people, i find hard on cit to gain an erection, and when i do, i cannot ejaculate for the life of me. But strangly enough, i get "wood" in the most unusual time or place, which frustrates me to no end. Im not sour, much. Its always up and down, just like my mood. At least i can take one positive in the fact that my body is all in sync.

I have ejaculated once in the past month when having sex. With citilopram 20mg I find that I can go on and on and not cum. As I said before this is a trivial problem when compared to depression - but a problem nontheless.

My current girlfriend obviously thinks I'm er...wonderful, but she does not know about my depression or my current medication, and I'd like to keep it that way. However, having sex is now more exhausting than 3 hours in the gym!!!

Six months ago I would almost blackout at the thought of meeting a girl, I think I am very lucky to be in the position that I find myself in now. Citalopram has worked wonders for me, the very few long term side effects are WELL worth taking the meds for.
