Really getting fed up with all this now.

My period was early in December with some lower abdominal pain. My doctor booked me in for an ultrasound scan which Im having tomorrow evening.

Meanwhile I had a smear test and have been terrified awaiting the results. Today the letter arrived telling me the results were unsatisfactory. Ive looked this up and it seems to mean it was either due to mucus/inflammation/blood at the time of test (the nurse did say one of these applied to me when she did the test) or the fact that not enough cells were taken etc.

The letter said I need to wait 6-12 weeks before I can have another one doing! This is terrifying me as if theres something up I don't want to be sitting around waiting till March.

What exactly will the ultrasound scan pick up? And how long until I know whats come up on the scan? If there is something wrong I really want to know immediately.

Id be really grateful for any advice on this x

"Unsatisfactory" does not mean "abnormal" - it means the test could not be done properly for all or any of of the reasons you mentioned. If they were at all concerned they wouldn't be making you wait 6-12 weeks for another one. Make sure you are not having a period when you do go back as you'll end up having another unsatisfactory test.

An ultrasound will show up any abnormalities in your uterus including fibroids, endometriosis or lots of other things. They will certainly tell you straight way if nothing is wrong.

Thankyou for replying Brunette.

The thing Im worried about would be that surely the hospital would just be treating me as a standard smear test result and not be aware of my accompanying problems.

If by chance something terrible was shown how would that be told me to me? A follow up appointment/ letter to my GP etc?

I think hospitals tend to treat things in tandem, if there are other investigations going on they'll link it to the standard stuff just in case there's any correlation between what's going on. I should imagine it also allows them to keep better track of your records.

When I was sent for an ultrasound I was told what condition was suspected before I went - it was basically a skin condition and I needn't have had an ultrasound at all. I could have refused but I went anyway. It was all done under the one doctor and he was a gynaecologist not a skin specialist.
