Hi all, (I'm a 23 yr old female)
For the last 8 weeks I have had blood either on wiping or on top of my stools. The last 10 days I have found blood and mucus on 80% of my bowel movements. (99% fresh bright red, 1 time a bit darker). The first GP I saw said it wasn't anything simple such as hemorrhoids when she did a digital rectal exam and so referred me to a colorectal consultant. I then went to another GP for a second opinion and he performed a proctoscopy (10cm long tube/camera in the rectum) - which caned... and told me I had classic hemorrhoids which were 'juicy and engorged'. The only other symptoms I have noticed are a very brief feeling of lower back pain (once every 2/3 weeks ish - no idea if that's related), sometimes I get trapped gas (always have due to anx), if I don't drink enough my stools are more like rabbit pellets, but when I drink 2 litres per day they are once again crescent shaped. They are not black or pale.
My appointment with the colorectal consultant which I have decided to keep is this Tuesday evening. I am absolutely terrified that he will tell me I need a colonoscopy or a flexible sigmoidoscopy as I do not feel able to undergo either of these procedures due to my severe anxiety surrounding painful medical procedures. I am also terrified he will perform a rigid sigmoidoscopy on me there and then in the clinic (which I have been warned he will want to do by my GP). I feel completely trapped as I need to know what is causing the blood and don't feel that I can be sure unless I have an examination of my entire bowel - but I really cannot have these tests. Since the blood started I have become extremely upset and depressed, I have missed work, I have sat alone in my room crying for about 3 weeks on and off, terrified of having these tests and terrified of what they may show.
I have been looking into privately having a virtual colonoscopy, but companies have refused me due to the fact that I am under 45 years of age - and obviously if a polyp or something suspicious were to show I would just have to go through a regular colonoscopy anyway.
Please help me :( any advice would be greatly appreciated. I feel so trapped and so so scared and extremely down.:weep:
