Amoxicillin for chest infection, more mucus.

I've been coughing up mucus for 5 weeks! it was slowly getting better but it was not clearing away so my doctor prescribed me Amoxicillin 500 (3 times a day) for a course of five days.

Today is the 3rd day and since day 2 of taking them i have been coughing up more mucus than before i started taking them. It seems to be getting worse not better.

Is this how it is supposed to work? I am aware that coughing the mucus up is how the body gets rid of the infection, but is it doing it more due to the antibiotics or does it mean there's something else wrong?

Hi its totally normal, its just the antibiotics working and loosening it all off your chest, i suffer badly with chest infections and this always happens to me too, hope you feel better soon x x

You don't mention whether they took a culture or not. If not, doctors will sometimes give antibiotics in case something is bacterial, even though it might also be viral. The antibiotics won't affect a viral problem.
