I have a fear of having constant continual panic attacks that never stop and I have this terrible fear of that killing me. I know its stupid but I am really scared of that happening and never being able to escape the panic its like a fear of losing my ability to remain calm during panic. I know its stupid but it really scares me. Please help

Hi Bex
1st thing to remember is ,although panic attacks can be very frightening they are completely harmless and wont kill you . I've suffered over 21 years with panic attacks and I`m still here ! I learnt over time to let the panic attack come and go without fighting it . I can honestly say you will and can get over them . I don't suffer with them like I did years ago because I have learnt over time how to control them .

If you haven't already click on this link and have a read on the forum

Hi Bexx,

It's easy for me to say do not fear, but let me assure you that no one in the history of humanity for the past 200000 years has ever been killed by a panic attack.

It is impossible. Completely and utterly impossible.

That doesn't stop panic being scary. But something can stop panic being scary. Either trusting that it is harmless. Or. Consciously choosing to let the panic attack flow unresisted to demonstrate to yourself first hand that it is completely harmless.

There is a technique that switches off panic attacks.

It was first described in modern medical literature by DR Claire Hazel Weekes who was nominated for the Nobel Prize for medicine twice for her findings and successes with Panic attacks. She herself experienced many until she started her approach.

An elaboration on this technique was also used by DR David Burns (the father of modern Cognitive Behaviour Therapy)

It is also found in the writings of DR David Carbonell, who is an authority on anxiety, panic.

It can also be found on the website panicend.com a free website which describes the same approach in a more unrestrained way.

It is also found in the approach of DR Harry Barry ... An eminent Irish physician who specialises in panic and anxiety.

It is also found on many pay for programs and ebooks as part of their methods.

The important thing to remember is that it works, and it is completely safe. By using this method you are in completely safe hands.

The method is simple but not easy at first.

Put simply you let the panic engulf you, wash over you, do whatever it wants to do to you.

Because the truth if the matter is that all that is happening is that you are experiencing fear, fear is not happening to you, you are just reacting in fear to a normal and healthy body reaction .... A panic attack.

Panic attack is a shockingly bad term. There is no attack, and you are the one who is panicking.

A panic attack is your body using up surplus adrenaline, in one big ten minute purge.

Imagine your body is a bath of water, currently full of adrenaline, the body know it has to remove this adrenaline.

It only has one method of doing this, to pull the plug and flush out the adrenaline. The adrenaline is the purged/removed from the body in a method what many people call a panic attack. A panic attack is no attack, it's good for the body. It's making your heart stronger. But as you fear the panic you keep topping up the bath water with more adrenaline.

I prefer to call it an energy surge. Because that's all it is.

It's exactly the same chemical as excitement.

You would get identical sensations if you won the lottery and were whooping in delight.

You would get exactly the same chemicals if you won the X factor

You would get exactly the same chemicals if you were getting married right now.

Adrenaline is utterly safe. In every way.

A panic attack is good for the body.

If you stop fearing it by understanding it you will never experience another one.

Can you see why acceptance works, we accept that the body is healing itself by burning up all the surplus adrenaline.

You are completely healthy right now.

I fully understand Bex how you feel . I used to think every time I had a panic attack it was going to be the last one and this was the one that would finish me off . It`s all about what`s going though your mind whilst your having the attack . As it says in the info I linked to you ... Do not add to your panic by thinking about what "might" happen. If you find yourself asking "what if?" tell yourself "so what! !!

I know when I can feel a panic attack coming on and now I can control it before it turns into a panic attack without thinking all the irrational thoughts in my head and breathing techniques really help and that feeling of panic subsides in no time ., but the main thing is , never run from it or fight it . Easy said than done I know but you can overcome this

thank you so much that is very helpful to hear so panic is actually helping the body not endangering it? Is it also impossible for a panic attack to keep going for very long? thanks x

Yes, panic helps the body, they are good for you. That's 100% correct. Believe me I know my stuff. I understand every single aspect of panic.

thank you again! I am starting to become more ok with panic attacks and I am glad that they cant keep going forever! I suppose your body would eventually run out of adrenalin? haha x

Yes, exactly. Have fun with them. It's only a temporary energy surge. If you have things to do then use the energy for the benefit of the activity you are doing. If you are in bed, then breathe deeply and enjoy the buzz.

Just remember the next time you have one, think back to someone winning strictly come dancing and think of their reaction, EXACTLY the same chemical response is occurring in you body as theirs.

They really can be fun, once you realise how profoundly safe and beneficial they are.

The irony is that once you change to this mindset, you stop having them because you no longer build up adrenaline.

thanks :) also do you anything about effects of anxiety on health - like im scared that my constant anxiety will give me high blood pressure - its my main fear at the moment

You also don't need to bother controlling your thoughts because whatever scary thought you have the exact same chemical builds up in the body. Once you stop fearing the buzz you will realise that you are not only not scared of the thing you used to be scared of, but you no longer fear any type of fear in the entire world. The freedom that gives you is amazing.

thank you thats a great way of looking at it. The exact same chemical would be released if I was excited and thats not dangerous!

It raises the blood pressure temporarily, but the body is completely capable of handling this excitement for a long time. For example ... I experienced high anxiety for 15 years, and Panic Disorder for about a year constantly without a second break. Once I understood what was happening, I felt great in about two hours and felt super relaxed and healthy and back to normal in a few days. It can happen in hours ... Literally, that's how good and efficient panic is. Panic is the cure. Not the ailment. There is no illness. There never has been, the medical profession have simply medicalised normal bodily function and incorrectly labelled it a disorder.

As DR Claire Weekes said ... When you accept panic, you are accepting a miracle worker.

Panic is the body's own cure for adrenaline build up.

Precisely, it's not even a 'way' of looking at it l.. It's the absolute truth.

There is a famous quote, ... Fear is excitement without breath.

Now go and google X factor winners reactions, and people being excited and having fun ... That's exactly what's going on.

People actually pay good money for the buzz you get for free!

You are completely fine. Just have fun. Don't fear energy.

Fear or excitement ..call it what you want to is an emotion.

An emotion is energy in motion

E-motion.

There nothing wrong with energy.

There is absolutely nothing whatsoever to fear.

And everything to be excited about.
