I have had a persistent fever for over a week now. No other symptoms besides fatigue and body aches. At first I thought that it was the flu, because I felt flu-like. But I still have the fever. I also thought that it might be mono, but I don't have a sore throat....I made the mistake of getting on WebMD last night, and Leukemia came up as a cause for persistent fever. Now I am terrified that I'm dying from Leukemia. I'm 23 years old, and I did smoke tobacco for about a year. Anyway, I'm just praying that I don't have cancer. And to make matters worse, I'm currently waiting for my Dr.'s office to call back. THIS IS TAKING FOREVER :(

Hey Jazzy,
There are many, many reasons for you to have a persistent fever- the most likely is a virus running its course and your body reacting exactly as it should......by raising your body temperature to burn out the illness.

And smoking does cause many cancers, but not leukaemia.

Persistent fever (a week or more) needs to be investigated by a doctor. There are many possible causes - leukemia is way down the list.
