Hello, I am amandah and I am nearly the Big 50 in December!! I am going through Hell at the moment with being peri-menopause and also I am a complete dental phobic as well.I have had this fear since my childhood. I live in surrey and dread big time the dentists. I cant afford to pay for private dental treatment and dread going into Hospital to have teeth taken out.i am on beta-blockers and have reflexology to help calm my nervous system. Please do email me if anyone has any ideas Thanks regards Amanda Harrison

Hi Amanda and welcome. You will get lots of support here and advise.
Iv just turned 40,and I wasnt looking forward to it at all.But We cant stop it happening.Everyone here helped me through that day,and they were fantastic.Iv got the dentist next thursday and I try and do some relaxation exercises before hand and I have a camomile tea.Try and explain to the dentist how you are feeling, they are very understanding and alot of dentists are trained in dealing with nervouse patients now.;)

Hey Amanda,

Thanks for helping identify the fabulous fifties in here...I don't feel so old now...51 but not trying to count!!

I have issues with the dentist and have done pretty much since day 1. Even now iI get vexed whenever an appointment comes along, but I do have a great NHS dentist. He is very calming and has helped me deal with my fears.

I have found being open about it helps them help you. Get as much relaxation as you can in before hand and think through those thoughts when you are in the surgery.

Afterwards give yourself a big pat on the back and a treat of some sort.... I just wouldn't recomend toffee!

Take care,

crickey.....I have an appointment coming up!!

I too suffer from medical phobias, needles, blood, hospitals, and dentists.

I have seen a therapist for my phobias, and am hoping soon I will get to see another therapist too to carry on helping me.

Some of the techniques (exposure therapy) that my therapist used are covered in the following book, and I have a copy of the book which is very good and helpful

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Overcoming-Medical-Phobias-Conquer-Dentists/dp/1572243872/sr=1-2/qid=1160165223/ref=sr_1_2/026-5950714-6150817?ie=UTF8&s=books

You can also order this book through WH Smiths which I did.
