Hi,
I'm 19, and have lung cancer...or at least am convinced to my core that I have it. I'm so so sorry if this sounds ridiculous -- I was diagnosed with anxiety about 2 months ago, at first i had hiv, then stomach cancer, due to a dull pain in my stomach, then a brain tumour, due to constant headaches, and i now have (i am a smoker of about 3 years, and athsmatic)
Shortness of breath,
Constant swallowing / Burping,
Pain in spine
Pain in shoulder blades.
Wheeziness

I've had panic attacks since i was about 9ish, so I'm used to anxiety - but this doesn't feel like anxiety, I am CONVINCED. I have just started back at uni, and although I act the social butterfly I know I should be I keep thinking that soon I'll not be here, and the guilt I feel for inflicting my family with lung cancer is so so strong. Please can someone help -- I've stopped taking prozac and am now on citralopram, I'm seeing my doc next week, but PLEASE, am so so worried, I'm feeling panic so so intense I'd sometimes rather be dead than inflicting this on my family. I don't expect you to believe me, but it's more stress than anything. I have asthma and get the shortness of breath/wheeziness when I start running or wake up in the middle of the night with it. I actually have a sharp pain in my spine. I feels kind of like a muscle spasm but a lot worse, feels almost like a pinched nerve in my spine. It gets like that when I lie on my bed and lean back on my arms. Then when I try to stand up the unbearable pain knocks me right back. You might want to try to cut back on smoking, even though it is extremely hard to. If you ever need to talk to somebody you can add me on MSN at: scottlryanmetfan@hotmail.com.

How often do you smoke, how many cigarettes do you smoke a day? And did you mention rib pain, if you did you might want to get an X-Ray. Just try not to worry too much about it in the meantime.

is anyone aware of the numbers? http://www.in.gov/isdh/dataandstats/cancerinc/cancer90/figure6_2.gif
0 out of 100000? i promise you you do not have lung cancer. cfury, you are crazy for telling her to get x-rays, no offense.

I'm just saying it could have to do with her ribs because she mentioned pain around her ribs.

Hi Jen,

I very much doubt you have lung cancer hun. I too have health anxiety and have diagnosed myself with numerous diseases just like you so I know exactly what your going threw at the moment. Take a good read threw some of the posts on the forum on health anxiety as this always helps me realise I'm not alone. Thinking of you. xx

Hi Jen,

Please try not to worry hun, your symptoms are all classic anxiety symptoms, you havent got lung cancer at all!
How long have you been on Citalopram? as they can take a good few weeks before you start feeling the benefits from them.
Its sounds like you are suffering from a lot of tension caused by anxiety, im glad you are going back to see the gp. Have you ever had any kind of councilling? sounds like have suffered for alot of years, write everything down about what you feel like and take it with you when you visit the GP, ask him about councilling im sure it would do you the world of good.

Here are some posts Jen that may help:

Hiya mate, sorry to hear all this... must be awfull.

on the smoking issue - if you think you have that go see your GP. but from what you say it all sounds like anxiety.

i guess you think you have it because you smoke? why dont you quit smoking? especialy if you have Athsma! it cant help.

Hi Jen,

I also thought recently I had lung cancer, Im an ex smoker (stopped 2 years ago) but smoked for a good number of years, so I freaked when I started getting some chest pains and a little blood in my saliva one day.

I saw my doctor who did tests and xrays etc, and found my chest was in very good condition, with no issues he could see. The blood by the way was from my nose, I had had a cold just before this happened, I was so embarrassed [:I] It was anxiety and a totally normal condition (a cold) that had took me to the brink !!!

So what Im trying to say, is I understand where your coming from! These things when they get into your head can freak you out to the point of losing your marbles, but the anxiety can cause lots of really bad symtoms and it doesnt mean theres anything wrong.

Go talk to your doctor, let him check you over, put your mind at rest and give up the cigarettes if you can.

And try to keep smiling [^]

Hi Jen, I had the same symptoms and my GP put me on Prozac. After about 6 wks taking the tablets (20mg a day) the symptoms went completely. I stopped taking Prozac about a month ago, and the breathlessness has come back so I know it's definitely an anxiety symptom and nothing life-threatening. considering going back on Prozac again if it gets a bit scary again.

Take care.
