View Full Version : Borderline Vit D

So I just called the Dr to ask to be referred to the Neurologist to which she agreed as the symptoms had been going on long enough & they couldn't explain them.

She then looked at my blood tests which I had 3 weeks ago to which I was told were normal! Obviously there has been an error somewhere as my Vitamin D levels are borderline low. Cue massive panic/anxiety attack as I have read somewhere about the strong link between low vit D levels and MS :(

However the rational side of me can see that all the symptoms I have been having (flashing lights, numbess, tingling etc) can be a sign of low Vit D. But now I am convinced it is MS of course. But the Dr said Vit D would only cause tiredness and not the pins and needles but various Vit D forums have said it can cause so much more than that.

Isn't it torture waiting to see specialists, I am so scared and worried now.

Daisy, your doctor is taking good care of you, allow yourself to relax into that. Ban yourself from Google, even to find out about the vitamin D, it's only making you feel worse. Even if it does turn out you have MS then it's a very treatable disease. There's not much that you can do between now and seeing the specialist, so maybe focus on some relaxation methods and tools to help you deal with the anxiety you're experiencing xx

Low Vitamin D is very common and usually not serious (other than the symptoms it causes!).

My doctor said low levels can cause fatigue, aches and pains. Plenty of stories people post online suggest it can cause a load of other symptoms too and increasing levels can make people feel a lot better.

Have you been put on a vitamin D supplement? If not you can buy your own Vitamin D3 quite cheaply and legally as it is food supplement not a medication.

Thanks for the reassurance :)

I have found a really long thread about the symptoms lack of vit D can cause and there are loads - all of which I have so that does make me feel better. However, because mine are only borderline and not really low low as such I am wondering if it MS.

Anyway, I guess I just have to wait and see. Hopefully I will get an appt asap.

It is not MS.

Make sure they are D3 Colecalciferol. The D2 type are not meant to be as good.

You have probably already found it but vitamin D council website (http://www.vitamindcouncil.org/about-vitamin-d/how-do-i-get-the-vitamin-d-my-body-needs/) can give you some idea how much to take. But obviously if the doctor has recommended a dose then stick to that.

How can you possibly say that? I agree that it is extremely unlikely to be MS, but based on some limited detail I think making a definitive statement like that is dangerous.

If you happen to be a neurologist then I apologise.

I wouldn't worry too much about your vitamin D levels. I was involved in a medical study on vitamin D in pregnancy and I tested borderline low, the nurse told me that it's unusual to find women in the UK who are not borderline low, it's considered normal. I now take vitamin D every day. I thought I had MS a few years back. I had tingling, buzzing, hot and cold feelings on one side as well as all kinds of crazy visual symptoms. I didn't believe at the time anxiety could cause all this but that's just what it was.

Hey,
I just wanna say I had similar symptoms a few months ago.
I had blood tests and they found I had a severe deficiency in vitamin D, which I found strange as that's most of what my diet is!
I was prescribed supplements and have been taking them ever since.
After a few weeks, months, I felt a lot better. A lot of the symptoms I feel are down to anxiety, but taking them definitiley helped me!

I was offering reassurance.

The reason I said it so definitively is because I have read DaisyP's other posts where she states she has seen four different doctors and an optician, had numerous tests and been given the all clear by all of them.

I did not offer medical advice or pretend to be a medical professional so please explain what is 'dangerous' about my statement?

Thanks everyone for the reassurance. My friend said that a lot of people are vit D deficient or borderline. I was reading a lot of symptoms about Vit D deficiency last night and it was fascinating. I am going to start taking my supplements and see how I go with them.

I am still going to see the neurologist though because it will put my mind at ease I think. Although I saw a chiropractor last night and he doesnt think it sounds like MS at all but he said it might be good to go to get that peace of mind. I will feel so relieved when this is all over (hopefully).

I know the dr said that vit d would only cause you tiredness but there are other things on the internet (which i know is not always factual) which suggests otherwise, forums full of people with funny symptoms with low vit D.

I am really interested to know that both MGW & Cattia had similar symptoms to me too!

This is why we should all be letting the mods deal with potential rule breaks on the forum.

There was a thread recently where some members were raising this as an issue but as I said on that, raise it to the mods so they can investigate why something has been posted. If saves the disputes that can arise from misunderstandings.
