Hi there,

I've been prescribed 20mg of Fluoxetine to help with my bulimia and binges.

I have suffered from this for 6 years which has led me to depression.

The thing is, I am on day 7 of taking it but my god, the side effects man!

For example, I woke up feeling great this morning then an hour later I have felt majorly depressed like never before- unable to get out of bed, no motivation, just crying all the time.

Is this normal or does this mean fluoxetine isnt working for me? I mean Ive never felt this depressed before and its freaking me out. x

The side effects can cause depression. You need to give it 6 weeks to calm down and see how you feel then. If it gets too bad to cope with before then you can go back to your doc and he'll try a different medication.

Good luck with your recovery by the way! I had bulimia (non-purging) for 6 years. I've been recovered for 7 years. Remember that it isn't the binges that keeps it going, it's whatever you do to 'balance them out' - whether that's purging, starving or overexercising. Stopping yourself from the weight loss behaviour rather than concentrating on the binges is the best way forward, because it's a self-perpetuating cycle.

I hated being told that when I was bulimic because it was the bingeing that really bothered me not the other stuff, but I thought it was worth mentioning! It really is the best way :)

thanks for your lovely reply- the thing that got me the most was when you said the last bit I hated hearing that because it isn't the starving that bothers me.

Then I read your last sentence, and realized how much I need to work at my recovery :)

I just threw out my scales...
