Hi everyone,

I found this site thanks to google (yes I was googling symptoms bad bad bad!!)

Anyway, my name is Kelly, I'm 25 and I'm in overall good health according to my doctor. I have generally low blood pressure, am overweight but have lost a few stones so not as bad as I used to be.

The reason I found this site is that I get palpitation / ectopic beats which started about five years ago when I was having a my first panic attack out christmas shopping alone. I paniced, rushed to the doctors in tears and demanded to see someone as I was sure I was going to have a heart attack or drop dead. The doctor sent me onto the hospital for an ECG and I also had a 24 hour tape which both came back normal.

I have these "extra beats" relatively often and a few times a year I have a long episodes of them that can last from hours to days! Each time I get the long episode I get very upset and anxious which then annoys my boyfriend who tries to reassure me i'm okay. I'm having one of those episodes tonight and trying my hardest to ignore them, but I'm getting one around every 10 minutes ish for the past five hours.

I notice I get them more when I have indigestion (sometimes wind can make it feel like a palpitation as I have taken my pulse at the same time and the beats normal but I get the same feeling as I do when I have a palpitation). MSG and other food stuffs can bring mine on too.

It is nice to finally find a place where there are other people feeling the same way I do! x

hi kelly
a huge warm welcome to you, you'll find this site a great support. I too suffer from these extra beats , had them for ages, so i figure anything serious i wouldn't be here.
Try not to google (im the worlds worst, as it increases your anxiety), im on a google ban, never googled for at least 3wks thats a record for me!!
I wish you all the best and take care.

Hi Kelly

I'm new to this site too - my husband foud it last week. It has been a life-saver for me this week - particularly the First Steps pages. It's good to know that you are not on your own, that others have similar symptoms and can reassure you that there are ways of dealing with them. I'm on meds for palps and tablets to help me sleep; I'm also taking Rescue Remedy which I can thoroughly recomend - its not expensive and is available at Tescos. Stick with NMP - I'm sure your friends here will help get you thru.

Take care

Sandie

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone :) I'm still getting them now argh so thats about 12 hours so far. During the night I woke up and they were really frequent, got myself into a panic, annoyed the hell out of the boyfriend.. so I went for a shower (at 5am lol) and tried deep breathing.

I might try and go for a walk later on, I've tried pretty much every other technique I know to stop them and all havent worked. The problem with me is i try to rationalise everything and I want to know why its happening each time it does lol. Like for example I was at a friends in a very smoky atmosphere (I dont smoke myself nor does my bf) and the palps started whilst I was there so I thought perhaps it was the fumes.

Hello again Kelly

Please be reassured that the palps are all part of anxiety - they are dreadful to experience and it's easy to imagine there is something dreafully wrong - but there isn't. My GP and LOADS of postings on this site advise that they are not doing any damage, they're not symptomatic of anything medically wrong. You have to keep reassuring yourself that it's just a panic attack, it will go away, it's not doing harm. The breathing exercises recommended on this site are good for helping distract and get thru the attacks.

Is it possible that a particular thought process is triggering the attacks?

Take care.

Well I try to find out why it happens and I know caffine, MSG and lack of sleep can cause them for me - last night I did have some chocolate I must admit but usually I only get one or two odd palps rather than hours of them. I did have a 4 day session of palps the day my dad was diagnosed with bowel cancer, but I could see that was down to stress. Thankfully he's doing really well now :)

The only correlation I can see for this attack is chocolate, smokey atmosphere and a very bad case of trapped wind and gurgly tummy!! :)

Update :)

Just got back from the doctors, I'm still having them but they are less frequent than they were on friday night. He doesn't seem worried at all, blood pressure is fine, pulse and heartbeat are fine..

Although I did think of another possible reason why its happened. I had an allergic reaction to some yeast infection tablets last week so I took piriton 3 times over 2 days to ge rid of the iching etc.

On the piriton leaflet it does say that it can cause irregular heartbeats and palpitations and an awareness of the heartbeat. Although the doctor did say that the allergic reaction itself may have caused the inital attack or a virus if my system is very sensitive.

Now all i gotta do is try to forget about it all and hope it will go away VERY soon!! :)
