Just curious..Everything I read says that escitalopram (Lexapro) is the improved version of cit (celexa), the same med without the side effects. The patent has run out on excitalopram so you can now get generic..If it is true that it is the cleaner version with no or less side effects why are they still prescribing cit and why are we taking it? Just wanted to know if you have any info on this..I am in the United States, if that makes any difference. thanks , debbie

Doctor tend to stick to the tried and tested method. And the generic version of Cit is still probably cheaper than the generic Es-Cit

Citalopram appears to have more of an antihistamine effect compared with escitalopram. This can be both beneficial or disadvantageous depending on whether or not you want that very slight extra sedation that comes with increased antihistamine activity.
