Sounds like it's a virus. What virus checker to do you have?

As long as you know the virus is no longer in the pc..........do a system restore

click start
Follow all programs
Go into accessories
Then follow system tools
In there........is system restore

Restore your pc to an earlier date where you knew your computer was ok.

I suggest you do a virus scan again before doing this...if the virus is in your registry.........that could be a problem....if it is a trojan...it could be repeating itself each time you reboot....they do that ya know

There is a very good virus scanner on the net that will clean and detect your system. The only downside..........it can take a few hours to do.

Upto you...............the address is

Windows defender isn't a virus checker, it's a spyware checker.

Trendmicro is fair enough, but it uses Java and most viruses disable Java from working properly.
You can get a free 30 day trial from Kaspersky - I've found that it catches most viruses:

The reason your computer isn't closing down properly, is because there is something active, which Windows cannot turn off.

As Andrew said, your best bet is to do a System Restore back to a point where you knew the Computer was fine.

As for Anti-Virus Software, McAfee and Norton are the two main players.

I personally dont bother with Virus or SpyWare softwares, as they slow everything down. Just be careful which websites you visit. It doesnt necessarily have to be 'shady' sites to get rubbish from. Most Shopping Sites, eBay being particualry bad, stick tonnes of MalWare onto your computer.

I know I keep saying it, but use FireFox instead of Internet Explorer. It automatically removes Pop-Ups, it AdBlocks, its superb. It will reduce the 'need' for a lot of Anti-Virus / SpyWare Software.

If your not a speed freak like me, install McAfee AntiVirus. I personally rate it as the best!

Download FireFox there. Its only a very small Download, and is truely superb!

Hiya Piglet.

McAfee is an Anti-Virus Package. You may want to consider a SpyWare program too. Especially if you do a lot of online shopping.

I recommend Zone Alarm http://www.zonelabs.com, but they are all pretty much of a muchness. Just always remember with Anti-Virus and Anti-SpyWare packages to keep them up-to-date. They should do this automatically, but it doesn't hurt to check this once a week.

To do this, goto the help file which came with your specific program, and search for Definition Updates (or something similar). The instructions will be there.

As for FireFox, YES it is 100% Free.

Incidently, ZoneAlarm is $40.00. Or, add me to MSN if your into that kinda thing! :p
