Hi Karina. Yes. That was shocking. The man arrested had mental health problems (obviously). It is yet another case of the failure of our mental health system. The beds that are available are taken up by crack heads. They need rehab centres for these people, not just putting them in hospital

Terry, our governments are the same ie there will be an 'enquiry' into why the mental health services failed this person, as he was known to them. We have done work at two mental health hospitals through work and the staff told us that the majority of beds are taken up by people who are suffering psychosis from using recreational drugs. They come in and are treated, go back out into the streets, get hooked again and end up back in hospital. They need to invest in rehab centres so people have better access to hospitals if they require it. So many lives are lost through suicide because they are turned away from a place that is supposed to offer care and is usually a last resort for most people. It is sad that the hospital system is failing people that need it.

That's just like over here, Tracy. When we get the occasional sword wielding case it's always someone "known" to mental health services. Always someone released who was deemed to be well enough but who is following them up to ensure they stay on the meds they need and that they don't mix them with anything that can lead to episodes like this?

The hospital services are very stripped back now. You can go into an A&E after an overdose, with a history of attempts, and end up booted back out with no psych assessment. Even getting admitted can mean you are booted out days later to await the community team to follow up, whichever week that may be. Plus they have closed down lots of the community stay centres and it's just the charities running the safe places now.

It's a disgrace. And it sounds like it's everywhere. Yet our bigwigs still drive around in expensive motors eating fancy foods at big do's. How much money could be saved by cutting down some of that?
