Hey,
Thought I would make a thread where people could post happy thoughts and traditions they have at Christmas.

I will start :).

Every Christmas our whole family sits together for lunch at 3pm, at 3.05pm my grandads watch will go off (like it does every year) and we all remind ourselves of the happy times with him. Then we eat huge amounts of food and pull crackers. :)

I'll share this...

Last Christmas I asked my GF to marry me. She's from Ecuador and her tradition was to go to church for midnight mass, come home, have a meal and then open presents.

We go to bed Christmas Eve rather early and I could tell she was a little disappointed (fell right into my plan)... I woke up around midnight to use the bathroom and came back to bed. I'm laying there for a moment and I hear "Papi, can we open presents?"... I say, "Tomorrow morning Ok?" and I hear with a hint of disappoint "Ok"... So I lay there for a moment and then ask. "Do you really want to open presents?" and she enthusiastically says "YES!!" ~lol~

I told her to go down and make some coffee and I'd be down. I had the ring in my pocket. So she lets me get some caffeine in me and we start to open presents. Mind you, I didn't skimp. I got her some nice stuff!

I don't know if you've seen the classic Christmas movie "A Christmas Story" with Ralph Billingsly but it's the story of a little boy who wanted a BB gun for Christmas. It's a classic and I did the Christmas Story proposal.

We opened all the presents and she was thrilled... Then she says "Well that's everything"... and I asked "Did you get everything you wanted for Christmas?" and right on queue she said "Yeah" with that tinge of disappointment... It was PERFECT!

This woman stood by me through my 2nd heart attack and cancer and took care of me when I couldn't take care of myself. Her love and selflessness is unparalleled and I love her deeply. So I told her my feelings and said "You stood by me through some of the worst times in my life. I want to give you some of the best years" and took out the ring :)

She said "Yes" through the tears... it was perfect.

So Christmas is a very special time for both of us. They weren't always that way and there were times I dreaded the holidays. Not any more. So those who have a rough time this time of year? There's always something you can do to make it special and meaningful.

Thanks for sharing fishmanpa, that story just gave me goosebumps.
Everyone, whether you are suffering from anxiety, mental health problems or physical health problem should have a good time at Christmas, its the one day a year you can fully have a 'day off' and do stuff you enjoy

Fishmanpa that story brought tears to my eyes!

We do our own traditional at home, no Christmas dinner at 3pm! We have breakfast lunch and tea just like normal days. No turkey either. No boring traditionals, we do our own thing which I think makes it more special. :)

Fishman's story is similar to mine...I also had a Christmas Eve proposal, mine was in 2011 and we married in 2012 and had a fab day.

However, my hubby is German so if its just the two of us we do most of our celebrating on Christmas Eve by cooking the Turkey and having the main meal on that day, but if my family are with us, then we do it all on Christmas day instead.

If he had his way we wouldn't have the tree until Christmas Eve either...this is when German families decorate their houses and trees and the children aren't allowed into the room until the tree is decorated. But since being with me he has had to compromise and have the tree a few weeks earlier :D We also have the traditional German Stollen cake with marzipan and gingerbread (Liebkuchen)

ISB...

Decorating the tree on Christmas Eve was a tradition when the kids were little. We would set it up a week or so before and spend Christmas Eve decorating, having libations (for the adults) and listening to Christmas music :)

Regardless of our feelings about the season (and I still abhor the commercialism), it's up to us to create a positive experience and memories.

Me and my family go to my aunt's house and have the traditional christmas dinner around 3pm, eat way too much and have a great time in each others company :)

The last few years I've had things dragging me down mentally at xmas so haven't been able to fully enjoy it but this year looks to be the first one in a while where I just feel so happy and grateful to be able to be around my family and just enjoy the day.
