Today one side of my tongue seems to be raised. Several of my family members have looked, and they see it too. When I swallow I feel that side of my tongue rubbing against the back of my mouth and throat.

I plan to see the doctor tomorrow (12 hours from now), and I need help thinking of the right questions to ask him, as well as which tests to ask for. You see, we're heading out of the country tomorrow, and I need to get a head-start on any tests or visits to a specialist which the doctor might order.

What could cause this? It's the first time I've ever felt this symptom. Could it be enlarged lymph nodes? Acid reflux? Something else?

Of course, my biggest battle is keeping a lid on my health anxiety while trying to look after a toddler AND make dinner AND pack for our trip. I have to admit, this is scary. When I see the side of my tongue that's raised, all I can think is that I have a tumor growing somewhere in my mouth or throat. :weep:

Thanks in advance!

is your tongue raised on the same side on which you sleep?

Thanks for your reply, courierdude! Yes, I normally sleep on my left side and that's the affected side of my tongue. Have you heard of that happening before?

So as it turns out, both my husband and my brother have tongues that are slightly raised at the back on one side. So if this is normal, why would I suddenly get a new sensation where I feel my tongue on that side of my throat and the top of my mouth each time I swallow? I don't get it. But this does ease my fears a little.

I'm *very* curious to know if anyone in this group has noticed the same thing?

Yes mine is the same.

Is there any pain?

If you can move your tongue normally, swallow, eat etc it doesn't sound like too much to be concerned with.

Rather than planning ahead and scheduling what you *think* the Dr will order (tests), or making suggestions to them, why not wait and see what they say and take their lead?

HA is often perpetuated by ongoing checks and tests - most of which are ordered to appease a patient - not because it is truly needed.

The first step might be to realise that HA is likely at play here and you are doing the right thing by getting it looked at. But rather than read, google or tell your Dr what you want, why not try to let them tell you what needs to happen - and try to trust if the answer is "nothing at this stage"

It may have always been that way and you've only just noticed now. Really, how often do you stick out your tongue to check if it is symmetrical? :winks: I imagine it would be rare for anyone to have a perfectly symmetrical tongue anyway, haha. As for the new sensation, perhaps there was something in the area that made you focus on it for a moment, and now you can 'feel' something different about that side even though it is the same as usual. I know if I focus on any part of my body it feels 'different', that's how I try to explain the link between the mind and the body to clients. If you focus on one of your palms long enough, it will feel strange and different to the other palm.

If it really does feel different to usual, it may be as simple as that you have bitten it in your sleep and caused some swelling. You have have eaten something that irritated your tongue, or a piece of food may have briefly blooded a gland on that side.

You shouldn't have to ask the doctor anything or suggest tests - just tell them what has happened, that it isn't normal, and see what they say :) It is their job to do the brainstorming, not yours.

I have often thought I've had this issue as well... Coffee and dehydration can play a funny role in how your tongue acts. I will sometimes swish some oil around in my mouth (oil pulling) and load up on water and I find that helps and then I forget about it :) good luck!! As we all know, HA seems to exacerbate when we think irrationally (not saying You's re doing this, I'm saying that I do this ) ... I'm struggling right now with high pulse and chest pain while trying to organize a family potluck for tomorrow.
I'll send you calming vibes :)

I've had this for 2days then today woke up with a horrible cold & sore throat. It's probably something like that I would try not to panic. Easier said than done I know. Sending :hugs: x

well, your tongue could be slipping between your back teeth as you sleep.

i have done it in the past and even bitten on my tongue that way and left ot quite sore and swollen.

just a thought : )
