You are not doing to die and you are going to be. Take some nice deep breathes, count to ten then breath out whilst counting to ten. If it helps then use a paper bag to balance out the oxygen in your body.

Are you on any medication?

The more you try to breath you are actually overbreathing and this will make you feel breathless and gaspy. If you can find a paper bag and breath in and out and slow and deep.
What helps me most when I get this way is to go online and play a game that makes my mind think and it distracts me and I start to come down faster.
Breathing is a natural thing, if you pass out your body will do it for you.
Close your eyes and breath in and count to 4 and then hold for 2 and breath out for 4. You can count longer but 4 works for me when I first start out.
I feel for you, even though I know it is anxiety it still takes me a bit to get thru it.
A quote from my book "end to panic"
fear is only strong if you feed it.

Hope it ends soon.

What side effects do they have?

Also it takes time for the medication to start working. How long have you been on medication?

hi,
i do have asthma. some good tips are to make sure you are breathing properly but not overbreathing. At night I have extra pillows to make sure that I am nearly sitting up as its easier to breathe like that. Its hard for me to distinguish between asthma and anxiety so I know how you feel!
Hope you feel better soon,

Lmb,

If you had ashma, you would know about it as its the breathing out that would be difficult not the in breath mostly, plus, you would hear a distinctive wheeze. Any doctor can check you out for this within minutes.

It is far more likely to be, that at night when you get into bed and all around is still, you become much more aware of your breathing and with that start to try to do it manually and not let the body do it as a reflex- as you're lying quietly your breathing will naturally slow down and you become aware of this and try to override it and thats where the worry and fear kick in..

Try the abdominal breathing that is explained in one of the previous links
