This is probably what a lot of anxiety sufferers experience, but I just want to see for sure - a problem shared is a problem halved after all.
I understand and accept that I have GAD, and I know that there is nothing physically wrong with me - its all in my head after all!
Because I know I have no physical illness to fixate on - I'm now worried that i'm going nuts.
I am about to go on to Citalopram today, but I wanted to tell someone about how I feel.
I'm worried that i'll lose control and have a fit in public, i'm worried that i'll go nuts and hurt myself or someone I love (i don't ever want to hurt myself or anyone else - its the fear of doing it that scares me), i'm worried i'll go crazy and end up in a mental hospital for the rest of my life.
I'm terrified.
Is this normal for general anxiety? Are people scared that thry're going nuts?
Can I get through this after experiencing these symptoms?

Hi Steve
Could of written this many times myself, no you are not going mad its quite normal, anxious thoughts that is all they are. I know its hard to believe your not going mad it has taken me several sessions with a consellor to believe this, and repeatedly she has told me that anxiety does not get you locked up in a mental hospital.

Hope this helps a little

Take care

Hi Steve

As you know and accept with GAD, its our thoughts (the what ifs) that can cause us the most distress and its those negative thoughts that keep the viscious circle of panic alive.

You have accepted that it is GAD you have and not anything physical so that is a HUGE positive step towards getting better so well done.

The next stage is to accept yourself and try not to frighten yourself by unwanted thoughts.

I spent some time years ago in a mental hospital ward but let me reassure you it WASNT because of GAD or panic attacks or anything to do with anxiety - and I got better, I didnt end up crazy or in their for life, etc, etc. We think like that due to fear - but reality isnt like that. Your doctor has diagnosed you with GAD and put you on approproiate medication so reassure yourself that its only your thoughts keeping the fear going.

In answer to "can i get through this after experiencing these symptoms" - YES - you will cope.

Hi Steve

I think you're right! I certainly thought I was going bananas at the start. It is also the fear of not knowing where all these symptoms have come from. The dis-belief that your thoughts are making you feel so bad and how hard it is to get them under control.
At one point I thought about trying to book myself into a mental hospital but my wife talked me out of it.
You will get through this, it just takes time and a bit of patience.

Take care
