i also am scared of being sick, and seeing others being sick. its the smell and sound and all the unpleasant associated with being sick. i panic when the norovirus is going around. ive heard alot about cbt but ive been refered to a phsycologist. can someone tell me the difference between the two please. ive had this for 9 yrs and hasnt got any easier. thankyou
Hi..
There are a lot of us that suffer with emetophobia here, so you're not alone.
A phsycologist i *think* tends to talk out the problem more, whereas CBT is exposure therapy and they get you to re-think they way your think about the problem. With CBT they may get to watch you a video or something - i could be wrong though. I know when i had CBT for my agoraphobia they wanted me to start going out gradually, so yes, exposure.
Being sick isn't nice. I had a tummy bug on the 19/20th Dec, caught from my son! However i was not physically sick i spent the whole day gagging with my head over the toilet, so i was pretty close. I will tell you something now, while i felt THAT sick i did not feel in the slightest bit panicky, i felt too sick! But then, if i sit here and think about being sick or if i've heard someone i've been near has been ill, that would make me highly anxious.
Sarah.
Hiya
i have also suffered a long time. I developed my phobia when i was 8 im 22 now. CBT aim tochange your way of thinking. i would never eat certin things in case they made me sick etc. CBT challenges thos things by doing them and the more you do it the more your mind believes its not that thing that makes you sick. I recently had a course of CBT and it helped massively now my fear only rears its ugly head during tmes of stress

HI There ,
I'm am new to this, however have emetaphobia in common with you all, I have been a sufferer for 11 years now and am 25 yrs old. I am at a complete loss as to how to get rid of this forever. I have tried doctors but find them most unhelpful, they just want to give me prescription medication, and i'm sure you know that we emets don't like to take anything which might make us feel a bit out of the ordinary.....
So I am australian and i see that most of you are from the uk. I would like to know if there are any aussies out there who can give me some advise on treatment in AUS.
Please help me
Kate:(

I am an emetophobe, interesting to know that it was considered a phobia, I thought I'd also be the only one. For the phobia, it's not just the fear of throwing up when i feel sick, but it's also the fact that many things link to it. I always thought it was difficult to swallow pills, and i fear somehow regurgitating them up as a repulse to my throat. So as indirect things I have difficulty swallowing pills, even though i can swallow food just fine, seeing people throw up, aside of me being sick, and even more so my emetophobia affects me wanting to drink w/ friends because i know most hang overs people get an upset stomach. So I usually avoid alcohol, and often don't even crave it ever.
But as we all know this is a Psychological phobia and it would be so much easier to have this dealt with so that daily factors don't take a toll on our zest in life. Does anyone out there believe hypnotherapy's could help relieve emetophobia at all?[xx(][Sigh...][Sigh...][Sigh...]
