Night shortness of breath-any ideas??

During the last few months, I wake up with a chest tightness, a cough and slight wheezing on exhalation. Got so bad that I went to A+E at 3am one morning. Did bloods, chest X-ray, etc. and all OK but still happens 1-3 nights per week. Anyone any ideas?
Me? 55yrs old male-smoker-Health Anxiety+OCD.

Could it be asthma due to your smoking?
Asthma can induce anxiety and vice versa (hence the chest tightness)
The only reason Im suggesting this us because you mention wheezing which is more characteristic of asthma shortness of breath than anxiety shortness of breath.
I have the same thing when I'm walking around and sometimes lying down or sitting and unlike previous shortness of breath episodes I have I do wheeze too.
Maybe discuss this with your doctor.
