hi for the past year and half what was a nervous habit turned into an automatic habit of gulping air and burping it back up supragastric burping... in theory I am creating my own acid reflux my own chest pains trapped wind jaw pain panic attacks the lot...but i couldn't stop.... I did it automatically unless totally drunk then it would stop

I paid someone the other day an American therapist to help me who specialises in peoples breathing problems who have serious health conditions and she wondered if she could apply the same technique to me as you should be breathing through your noise anyway apparently?

here is the exercise hope you've got all your top teeth it helps:D

rest your tongue on the roof of your mouth against your front teeth gently and try and fill the whole top area it will feel weird and uncomfortable at first after a day it starts to become more normal and in a relaxed manor

now youll find that within reason no matter how much your mouth is open you breath through your nose and again within reason you cant burp etc

I hope within a week I feel better I do at times during the day and were 48 hours in still revert back to my old habit a lot but not as much

as soon as I do it make sure my tongue goes back to the roof of my mouth and carry on the new habit

Thats interesting, Kris. I've just tried that and no, you can't breathe in through your mouth and have to use your nose! I can still breathe in through my mouth but I have to lower the rear sides of my tongue from the top of my mouth otherwise only my nose will do it. It must be a muscular thing. So, the challenge seems to be keeping your tongue there because the breathing becomes instinctual from there on as you have no other choice.

Is it just for the issue you were having or a more general breathe retraining thing?

I bet it will take some time, retraining breathing isn't easy. Its supposed to be quite beneficial though and something that can help with breathing disorders e.g. asthma so I should be trying something like this for mine (although I think you tend to breathe in & out through the nose with things like Buteyko).

Good luck, I hope it helps you. Its certainly an easy one to try. I found doing that easier than using calming breathing technique which isn't the easiest thing when you have asthma!

yes im on my 3rd day and id say I put my tongue there automatically for 10 mins of every hour which is an improvement

the reason is because it is causing my own acid reflux which in turn is fueling health anxiety acid reflux gives some symptoms in totally irrelevant places and in my chest area

the first 24 hours I was uncomfortable with my tongue there but its slowly becoming an sub conscious better behaviour and more relaxed
