I have been to see two different gps in the space of ten days due to an extremely painful swollen vein which is on my left shin. On Saturday 13th June I got an agonising shooting pain that went up the vein, I was worried I had dvt so saw an out of hours GP who said it was inflammation of the vein something like phlebitis I believe they called it. I have rested it as much as I can, elevated it where possible put hot and cold compresses and rub anti inflammatory gel into it but nothing seems to help. If anything it seems to be getting worse. I had a blood test today a full blood count to be precise, I am so scared its cellulitis or worse scepticism and I'm going to die. I've been going through a pretty traumatic time of my seven year relationship ending, having to move out and leave my to precious dogs behind but anxiety and stress can't cause veins to swell. Any help and advice would be much appreciated,

The GP would know best. If you had septicaemia I believe you would feel really ill and not have pain localised to a vein.

If they were worried about you, they would have sent you to the hospital etc and not just ordered bloodwork.

All the best.

Laura, did you ever find out the cause? I have this on the back of my knee. My doctor has pretty much blown it off, but my whole leg is in pain and it is not getting any better. Thinking of getting in touch with a vascular doctor tomorrow.

Oh no, best of luck. Please let me know how it turns out. I will be curious as my veins in the back of my right thigh have become very visible as well. One very inflamed, and the rest just bright blue. I am right there with you in terms of being fed up!

Bha123 it's strange how a vein can suddenly become inflamed with no reason, are you pale skinned and would you mind me asking how old you are as I'm finding now I'm in my thirties my veins seem to be more visible but not sure if that is due to my age, my inflammatory bowel disease, a bacterial infection or whether they have always been that way and it's only now I am anxious and focusing on them that I think there is a problem. I do hate how the doctors just brush it off as though it's nothing

I am 29 and very fair skinned. Really the only reason I noticed the vein getting bigger is because the back of my knee has hurt for over a month and we can't figure out why. It is a little swollen, along with the inflamed vein, and I have shooting pains up and down my leg. Been tested for dvt, bakers cyst, etc. and everything comes back clear. The only other thing I can think of is maybe sciatica? But I don't think that would make the veins so visible. I'm thinking of making a vascular appt soon. Let me know how yours goes!

LauraWoo84- How did your appt make out? I had a cardiologist appt yesterday and showed it to him, but again didn't seem too concerned. I told him how much pain it was causing and he said he could refer me to a vascular specialist to have it stripped. I'd prefer to NOT do that if I don't have to. Still wondering if I should see an orthopedic..
