Hi all,

As a lot of you know we have been having problems with our chat room for quite a while now and we have been looking for a new one which is non java based.

Alex, Nic and I have been testing out a new chat room as we have found one that could potentially replace the current chat room.

There are several options for this chat room that we are available to us and one of those is the use of webcams in the rooms, To be honest we are completely torn as if we should include this or not.

On one hand we think that this will be a useful feature if someone is panicking and they are able to see and talk to someone then it may help them.

On the other hand we think that this privilege could be taken advantage of and maybe used inappropriately by some of our members.

I am writing this thread to ask peoples honest opinion on this matter……

1. Do you think webcams in the chat room are a good idea?
2. Do you think they will be abused?
3. What do you think the webcams would be useful for?
4. Does it spoil the anonymity of the chat room (you would be able to choose if you wanted to share your webcam with others)
5. Do you have any other issues with the use of webcams in the chat room?

When I first saw your question it got me quite worried as I personally wouldn't want the webcam feature but as long as it is optional and I will still be allowed to use chat then I will go along with the majority. for me I find chat helpful but I like that its anonymous means I can say things that I wouldn't otherwise be able to talk about.
hope this makes sense.

I would personally say that it is a nice thing to have, but very very non-essential and would need to be monitored and controlled by each individual.

The chat room is a good way for people to talk and express themselves anonymously and hopefully provide a platform to build confidence during some very difficult times, so the fact there is a webcam option could maybe be enough to put people off, or make them reconsider fully opening up just in case their identity is revealed.

My biggest worry would be the abuse of the feature. People using the chat room are often likely to be in a vulnerable state and potentially not capable of making the best decisions for themselves, so if there is a possibility that someone could be manipulative or abusive with the webcams - even if that possibility is very very small - it is something that should not be available to them.

Looking forwards to the new chat room! :)

In what ways could the webcam be abused?

One obvious problem is going to be giving medical advice and I don't believe that rule is followed much on here anyway. (Or is even possible considering some boards)

So, it might help if the downside can be defined?

It could end up with someone exposing themselves I guess Terry!

It is not about giving medical advice or not - it is about what people can do and see on a webcam

Yes, unfortunately this is the internet and no matter what site you are on, sex is very prevalent and there will always be people who try to use chat rooms and forums for their own abusive purposes. Sad but true.

I personally would not like to use a webcam, I think the site's anonimity is what gives people the confidence to reveal very intimate feelings. But if it is an option where people can decide wether they want to use it or not, both parts, then I don't see a problem. But as somebody above said I also see it as non-essential x

Good point Nic, but I promise I won't :D (heh, it's not in the rules though so I might get away with it if I'm not deemed as having offensive bits :roflmao:)

That does raise a very important issue over the age of people on here. I can see some people saying they are not comfortable talking to children, for instance.

It does kind of feel useful for some people, although it's not my thing. Perhaps if it's set to off by default and maybe it has to be turned on my admin the first time so some vetting is done if thats possible when thinking about kids?

You wouldn't want me in there anyway, your screens might crack and besides I would have to place a number of amusing objects in the background to give people a giggle.

Is Venus still trapping the Russian Brides? :winks:

I think the Web Cam option is a really bad idea, I think it will be abused, and will make people feel uncomfortable even if it's optional. As I see it, chatrooms are not a place for web cams, if people want to video chat there are many other arenas to do so. I feel like there is also potential for coercion of vulnerable members in the guise of support. I really can't see a way in which they would make a positive addition... Just my two cents xx

Ok, so my opinion...

I believe that a webcam is not necessary in a new NMP chat room. Yes, it can be abused and yes people probably want to keep their identities hidden. And yes, it may drive people away quite possibly. I understand there would most likely be an option to opt in or out of the feature during chat room use, however to some it may feel like added pressure... like when you're a kid and the other kids are doing it and you feel that pressure to join in. This could possibly cause more anxiety.

While technology has advanced much since the beginning of chat rooms and message forums, sometimes it's better to just keep things simple. Seeing as how a lot of people on here probably don't like change in general in their lives (because it may make them anxious), I think it's best to stay simple. Leaving the webcam feature out would also leave out more risk of people possibly being sexually harassed as brought up previously on this thread, verbally harassed or made to feel uncomfortable in a place that is supposed to comfort them. Also, if a verbal harassment or even sexual harassment situation occurs on a 1 to 1 webcam on NMP, there would be no written evidence if it were an issue to be brought up and dealt with later... etc.

Anonymity might make some people more comfortable considering that living with an anxiety disorder, we sometimes fear things happening even knowing the likelihood of it not actually happening. For example; someone may fear a coworker or old classmate could log on and find out that they are on here which may make them uneasy.

I personally say any new chat room is wonderful if it is easily accessed by all members on all platforms and technical issues are virtually non existent. Availability for smart phones and tablets would be an added plus but not vital. :)

Thank you all for your opinions.... to be honest they are mostly going along with our thoughts on it but thought it only right to give members a say too.

Any more opinions welcome :)

I have had a peep at the new Chat Room and has loads of features.

I think generally people will feel more comfortable without a web cam, not that I am worried about Nic exposing herself ;)Paul is another thing:ohmy:

Hi
I think web cams in chat is a bad idea I certainly wouldn't use the feature but if you decide to go ahead with it maybe we could up the mods in there ( I know easier said then done lol ).
By the way I'm really happy to hear we may have chat back up
And running soon I miss it very much
Am happy to still be a mod if you will have me :-)

No idea if it's helpful, but if you need any testers for the chat room before it goes live, i'd be happy to volunteer :)

I agree with everything Sophie said.

To me the chat room should be a place where everyone is welcome and included, and I would worry that a webcam might be divisive.

I don't have a webcam myself, never will do. I think it could be abused if we could have webcams in the chatroom.

Looking forward to see the new chatroom and hopefully can get start back chatting more regularly.

Hi all,

Great to see a new chatroom is being planned! I'll start writing some quizzes while I'm still on holiday, just to get ready! :D

Webcams - no thanks. Too much potential for mischief.

Happy to hop in for any testing as and when required!

Froggy - we are not paying for the moderator chat option to start with as it is another $200!!! So don't worry about quiz yet.

That's okay, Nic - The last couple of quizzes I did in the old room were just impromptu ones in the main room with no moderation - worked fine.

It will have to be like that again for now I think
