Went to a pizza place with a colleague today and we were seated quite near the area where they prepare food. After ordering, I heard the sound of someone pumping a bottle of cleaning spray several times. I looked around but couldn't see over the partition to where they were making the food. On our way out, I heard the sound again, and one of the pizza chefs was spraying cleaning spray all around the food prep area. I'm really worried that he sprayed it on our food, or at the very least near our food and some got on! Do you know how bad this could be? Should I try to make myself throw up? The only 'good news' in this is that I just had one small piece of my pizza as I wasn't too hungry. So scared!

It would only have been a weak solution of a kitchen surface cleaner. No need to worry at all in fact be pleased that the place was cleaned. Do not make yourself sick. I have HA & i use spray on worktops etc in kitchen all the time. You are ok.

Thanks Autumn. It's that same purple stuff they use on the tables after someone leaves. I don't think cleaners belong anywhere near food. It's making me so nervous!

Is there anything I can or should do in terms of eating break or drinking lots of water to protect myself against this possibility?

You will be fine, Lauren. In fact, you will find it will be part of food safety for them to be doing that to protect you all. Chefs have to be trained in those areas and they are taken very seriously because of public health so I would expect they are using "food safe" disinfectant cleaner.

In fact, to demonstrate this I just Googled it and a page of cleaning product sellers popped up and this is what a few had to safe about theit products:

--------------------

Gentle as Water

While the spray is tough on bacteria*, it’s also mild enough to use around kids, pets and food. The versatile pH-balanced formula can be used on most surfaces anytime, anywhere.†

Food hygiene regulations are getting increasingly tighter meaning that not only do food environments need to be kept spotlessly clean but they must also be cleaned with food safe chemicals. We have a range of specially formulated food safe hygiene supplies that will help you comply with these regulations allowing food preparation areas to be safely cleaned and sanitised.
It can be difficult to find a gentle, food safe cleaner that can tackle heavy soiling and is still strong enough to kill dangerous bacteria such as E Coli. Our food safe disinfectant offers the ultimate in food safe cleaning and is widely used throughout food processing factories as well as in restaurants, hotels and commercial kitchens where food safety is paramount.

Surface Sanitizer Spray, fast drying, food safe

This spray is food-safe so may be used in all food preparation areas.

It is fast-drying so that the area being cleaned may not need to be wiped dry, making its antimicrobial action more efficient.

Suitable for clinic, home and industrial environments.

VIRUSOLVE+ is completely harmless to humans and animals at optimum operational strengths. It requires little or no additional training and no specialist protective workwear or gear.

Food And Beverage Preparation
The manufacture of food and beverage products, especially chilled, ready to eat food products, relies on maintaining the highest standards of food hygiene in storage, production, assembly and packing areas. The stringent legislative standards required today, and the prevention of cross-contamination, can only be achieved by effective disinfection and cleaning programmes.
VIRUSOLVE+ is ideal in this application as it wipes out all micro-organisms - including spores - and yet leaves negligible residues and renders surfaces both safe and hostile to future infection. It can be used at every stage of food production from the field to the plate and has proved itself in trials and tests.

Can you see how they are all saying these standards are mandatory? So, they are places on them by someone like the Food Standard Agency, a branch of the government hence law.
