Hello, last Friday I started taking 20mg citalopram for my anxiety and I was wondering if it is dangerous to mix it with alcohol. I plan on trying to go out this weekend with a few friends but just want to make sure it's okay. Thanks!

Also thought it'd be appropriate to mention that I haven't got any side effects since taking it. Is this normal?

My feelings are not to mix the two and if you have to ask then you probably shouldn't but you make you own decisions. From Drugs.com

Using citalopram together with ethanol can increase nervous system side effects such as dizziness, drowsiness, and difficulty concentrating. Some people may also experience impairment in thinking and judgment. You should avoid or limit the use of alcohol while being treated with citalopram. Do not use more than the recommended dose of citalopram, and avoid activities requiring mental alertness such as driving or operating hazardous machinery until you know how the medication affects you. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs. Do not stop using any medication without first talking to your doctor.

I drink less on citalopram, partly becausei don't "need" drink to socialist any more and partly because I get drunk about a third faster, I'd advise trying to limit the amount you have a bit, but no harm in you having a few!
No side effects is great!

I thought alcohol is a depressant so I stay completely off it while on citalopram.

I see it as a commitment to getting better - I like the odd drink too.

That being said I've never drunk as much now as I used to before ever experiencing depression.

Thanks for the replies guys. I think I'll take it easy this weekend, I don't usually drink a lot anyway but I'll be extra careful when doing so.
