Ive just been diagnosed with Polycystic ovary syndrome, which was a bit of a shock!! Anyway, Ive been reading up on it and there seems to be links to it and depresion and anxiety. I'm being put on metformin which is actually a diabetic drug, as it seems to affect your insulin levels. Just wondering if anyone else has had experience of this or knows anything about it.

Mabel

Sorry but I don't know much about this atall.

What are the links with anxiety etc? Can it be easily treated?

hi there Mabel,

I'm sorry to hear that you have been diagnosed with this!! I have no idea what it is (sorry!) but just wanted to wish you well and hope that the meds work for you! Take care.

not really sure yet need to do some more research. Messes about with hormones and insulin levels. Instead of releasing an egg you get a cyst. Seeing the consultant on thursday so will know more then. Seems i have had it for a long time but being on the pill covered it up.

I shall see anyway!!

Hi Mabel ,

PCOS is a tricky one . There are many theories about it out there .
It is different from having polycystic ovaries .

Often being on the pill kick starts it, its predominantly a hormone illness which reaches out to affects other organs ie diabetes link . You are not diabetic just have innappropriate amounts of insulin released at once . Metformin regulates this . Get your eyes checked too .

Let us know how you get on and what is suggested .

Hi Mabel,

I too have been recently diagnosed with PCOS and was quite relieved to find that there is a strong link between anxiety/depression and this disease. I haven't started on Metformin yet but will be doing so after a final ultrasound next month. From what I've read, some people have found that by controling their insulin levels better (which Metformin helps with) and by getting their hormones under control too (which Metformin is also good at) they feel much less anxious and/or depressed. So I'm very hopeful that this will the be the case for me.

Here's a good link for PCOS support (including a formu where anxiety and depression have been regularly discussed):

Perhaps you and I can keep in touch over the next few months to see if either of us finds any improvements in this treatment. I hope so! :)

Mabel, I am pretty sure that I have PCOS too, and have been a member at another great site called Soulcysters. It's addy is www.soulcysters.com The have very detailed explanations about PCOS and the lady who started the group, Kat Kearney (sp?) has been realy working hard to bring about more awareness of this syndrome.
One of the therories about the PCOS and panic/anxiety link has to do with the insulin resistance. I know from personal expereince that when I eat high-carb I have more blood sugar issues and thus more panic issues. I don't know if it is the same with every woman or not. I think that in my case it was a combination of the hormonal inbalance and the blood sugar issues along with intense stress that was the beginning of my PD. Over time I think that perhaps my body just got so conditioned to respond with abnormal ammounts of what ever chemicals it is in our braind that cause the "run" signal (adrynaline?) to even minor situations. Which is like a light-speed reaction of intense fear to silly things. I also get so tensed up that I overbreathe....... anyway, (sorry for the little side rant) That is my own personal theory about myself.
As far at information about the Met, I do know that at the soulcysters site there is tons of information about it and lots of the ladies there know more about it than I do. It is a great support board, almost as good as the folks here. Just a different subject. I had not heard of the other support group link that was put up here, I will have to go check it out! Thanks Wishingstar for putting it up!! Mabel, I hope that these two sites will help you get some answers!
God bless you and yours
Debbie

Thnks all!!
I'm off to see the consultant again tomorrow. Ive had all the scans done (surely noone needs to see their insides!) so i'll let you know how I get on!!!Quite relieved in a way to find out. I know my anxiety and depression would probalbly be there anyway, but if there is something there that is making it worse, and I can do something about it, then thats good!!!
My consultants name is Dr Fox (how funny is that, I cant look at him without giggling!)

I'll let you know how I get on tomorrow
Thanks again

Hi Meg

I was on the pill for about 6 years, didn't realise it can cause PCOS.

Good luck Mabel, at least it's being addressed.

It doesn't cause it as such but the sudden change in hormones can kick start it into being symptomatic if it was going to happen anyway.

I'm not sure whether all docs would agree but there is anecdotal evidence and case studies which suggest this.

Hi Mabel

Went to docs today and have to go for a scan to determine if I have PCOS, just wondered if you'd be able to tell me much about it as i feel really nervous about going for this. I know i'll be ok, it's just better for me to get an insight before i go. Got all uptight about just going to see the doc again about it (have social phobia and really didn't want to be sat in the waiting room today)..but i managed it ok :)

well, i went to the specialist today. He recommended Metformin ( a diabetes drug which also works for PCOS). I'm not starting it for a few weeks as he said 1 in 5 people have a reaction to it and it will probably make me sick for few days until I get used to it. As I have an ofsed inspection in 2 weeks time and have mountains to do I didn't feel I could start it yet! Can't really leave my class to throw up id I have inspectors in the room!
Shall let you know how I get on
