I went to the one near Portsmouth and in my opinion it succeeded because the organiser was very enthusiastic and she posted almost daily for a number of weeks before the event!

Another good point was the fact that the venue was very specific (in this case a pub) and was checked out beforehand too.

Maybe this meet would attract people from the Bristol and Gloucester areas as well?
