I posted over in the blood test forum yesterday, but recent developments compelled me to post here and ask what everyone thinks.

For 2 weeks my calf has been heavy, burning, in pain and a bit swollen. About a10 days ago I went to the ER because of a bad cramp/my foot feeling pin and needley...they did a doppler ultrasound which came back negative.

A few days later my leg is not getting any better so I head to my GP who examines my leg and says it is a bit swollen. He orders a d dimer which comes back high (.49 is cut off it comes back at .54) which freaks me out so he says to go to ER and have them look at me.

I go to the ER, they do not repeat the scan, but instead decide to repeat d dimer which comes back at .33 which is normal. They decide nothing else needs to be done and send me home with no explanation for my pain.

Today I go back to the GP again to follow up and show him that my leg is still kind of swollen and is definitely still bothering me. I also have a tender spot on my calf. He decides I need to go see a vascular specialist TODAY, but the only office that my insurance takes is closed because the dr is on vacation. My dr then changes his mind and says it can wait til he gets back.

Well now that I'm fired up and scared I head back to the ER where no tests of any kind are done except for me pushing the dr's hand with my foot. In doing this he calls my GP and together they decide to scrap the vascular specialist and send me to a neurologist instead.

I do not know what to believe and why my GP changed his mind so quickly without any other vascular tests.

Sorry this is so long! But what would you do next? I'm terrified of having a clot and I'm not having faith in these docs.

Is the high d dimer test even significant since it is so slightly elevated? DO I still push to see the vascular specialist? OR do I find a new doctor altogether haha

Hi,

This sounds a really tricky situation.. and I totally understand your concern. I don't know anything about the d dimer test... or blood clots etc. Have you been told to take aspirin or anything like that? if it helps ease the worry in the meantime maybe half an aspirin (if you have not contraindications) may help. I think you have to trust your doctor(s)... have your symptoms improved at all? The fact that the doppler 10 days ago was fine and you're still with us (sorry!) is a really good sign it's not anything dodgy. hope you get some answers. xxx
