View Full Version : Biopsy today

Well today I had my endometrial biopsy, now I just have to wait for the results. I wasn't expecting to have the biopsy done today, a receptionist phoned me yesterday to ask if I could come in 15 minutes earlier as the consultant needed to get off to a meeting and I said that was fine, and by the way, would I be getting any tests or procedures done on my first visit? She said no, it was just a consultation and if the doctor thought I needed any tests then an appointment would be made for a later date.

So when he said he would do the biopsy today I was a bit taken aback and told him I wasn't expecting this. He said it was up to me, he could either do it today or make an appointment to come back in 2-3 weeks as a day surgery patient and have it done under general anaesthetic. I thought about it and decided to just go for it otherwise I would be spending the next 2-3 weeks worrying about it. The biopsy itself wasn't too bad (I'd heard horror stories) and he also removed a small polyp at the same time. It was a bit uncomfortable but not agonising and I'm glad I didn't chicken out and opt for a later date.

He said there is a 5% chance that it could be cancer, but in 95% of cases the results come back normal.

Keep everything crossed for me folks!

He was never going to be able to say that it would be 100% OK but well done for going ahead with it there and then. No point in putting it off and adding to your waiting game which is long enough anyway.

The waiting for results is horrible but has to be done. Every day is a day towards your all-clear .Keep posting on here if you feel it helps you and we can support you through the wait xx

Thank you everyone, I'm trying to focus on the 95% and not the 5% lol.

He did say that even if it was cancer it's the type that can be treated by having a hysterectomy, so that is something to hold onto too.

Hey Mojo! Not too sure why you're having your endo biopsy but I just went through this too due to irregular bleeding after periods. Turns out I had polyps. I totally understand your fears since I just went through this. I found it helpful to focus on the 95%!

Hoping you're feeling ok as that biopsy is THE PITS!

Big hugs.

Hello Mojo, I totally relate to how you are feeling. I had random spotting for a couple years during perimenopause. In my mind, if it didn't last more then 10 days it was just a 'light period" .. then the spotting came and didn't stop.

I was at 5 weeks when I went to the gynecologist. I was positive this was something bad.

She said she I needed an endometrial biopsy (among other tests), I could make an appointment or she could do it right then and there.

I was already scared out of my mind.. I didn't want to go home and wait for yet another appointment so I let her do it right then.

I told her how horrible waiting for test results was for me, she prescribed 10 xanax pills.
I took 1/2 a few times and it really did help.

My issue turned out to be perimenopause and fibroids. In other words, normal and common.

Thing is, I was absolutely positive my luck had run out, who bleeds for weeks and weeks on end??

Just wanted to share because so many of us go through things that to us seem dire.. and in the end, we're really ok. :-)

My wish for you is that the days go by quickly and you get your good results and can have peace of mind.

Yeah, you did the right thing, Mojo. Sometimes they just want to get it done rather than put you on hold further since the quicker they deal with you, the quicker they discharge you.

My dad & brother have both had biopsies. My dad did have a form of skin cancer so they dealt with that quickly but the specialist new what it was just from looking at it, and it's a very common & easily treated one anyway. In my brothers case he had an inflamed nodule in his throat and he had to have a general whilst they did that biopsy. The consultant said exactly what yours has - it may be cancer but that's at the rare end of the spectrum and it's more like X, Y or Z. His consultant said they have to make patients aware of possibility but their opinion in terms of how likely is what that matters. His was nothing and they whipped it out to stop it causing more pain.

I'm sure you will be fine.

Hi Nancy. Thanks for asking - no, nothing yet. It was a week ago yesterday and the consultant did say 2-3 weeks for the results so it is a bit early yet I think.

Thank you for your reassurance xxx

Thank you my friend.

I got a fright on Tuesday morning; a text came through on my phone and all I could see before I'd fully opened the message was "Medway Maritime Hospital. We w......."

I was shaking like a leaf thinking it was going to say we want to speak to you urgently regarding your biopsy... What it actually said was: We would like you to think about your recent experience in the outpatients department and to tell us how likely you are to recommend Medway Hospital to friends and family" Fancy sending that to a patient who has recently had a biopsy! Bloody idiots

What a fright lol, I aged 10 years during those brief seconds..

Do you honestly think so?

From my experience... I had my biopsy and was called a few days later for my (bad news) appointment. So yes, no news is good news. I understand your anxiety about this but each day that goes by should help you to breathe easier. Also, keep in mind that if they suspected anything sinister, the results would have been flagged for quicker results.

Absolutely Mojo, if the lab spot cancer they will flag it quickly so your doctor can get the ball rolling with treatment. My mum has always said no news is good news with the NHS, it's an old saying and a true one.

What a stupid text! What idiot thought that one up and didn't think about cases where sensitivity is needed?

Mojo, I know so xx I had the same experience as Fishman, after my biopsy I was back within the week - if they find something malignant, the planning starts immediately.

As for the text..not surprised unfortunately. I do wish they wouldn't do things like this, its so insensitive.

Try and relax if you can, all will be well xx

I'd certainly recommend that they stop sending stupid feedback texts to patients awaiting test results. Why does everyone want feedback these days? Soon there will be someone waiting with a clipboard and a survey form as soon as you come out of an operating theatre.......

Mojo, I'm sure your wait is nearly over and you will have some positive news to tell us. xx

Crazy isn't it? "Would you recommend this hospital? ". What a stupid question in the public sector, we don't opt to go to them in the first place.

"Would you recommend this ambulance?" Blink twice for No if you are too ill to tick a box.

When my brother had one on a swollen nodule in his throat be waited weeks. The consultant had said he couldn't rule out cancer but he highly doubted it and believed it to be one of the many benign reasons. He said he couldn't say for sure because only a test would prove that and they need to truthful with patients. He was right, it was nothing and just needed removing due to the pain element.

I agree with Mercime, they don't mess about with red flags.

In today's world, feedback, 5 star Google ratings etc. are an essential marketing tool for any business including medical facilities. That's not going to change in lieu of a patient with anxiety or based on what procedures/tests were done. Many use software or online subscription services to do this. It's an automated process.

Yeah, I remember when you used to at least get something for providing feedback. Might be an entry in to a drawing or a 5%-10% discount on your bill or something like that, but now they don't offer anything and the surveys are even longer than they were then. I don't bother participating anymore. Just too much time and doesn't really do anything for me. I'm already giving them my money, now they want me to spend my own free time telling them about their business? No thanks.

Mojo - I'm in exactly the same boat as you.

My ultrasound came back fine and the consultant said he didn't expect the biopsy to show up with anything, but keep thinking about that 10%

Had it done on 22 August - now 31 August and still haven't heard anything. My mum always says no news is good news, but it doesn't stop me worrying. Keep wondering if they don't have my phone number and that's why they haven't called me....

Trying not to Google any more since I am going nuts - why do we do this to ourselves??

Excellent news!!! :yesyes::yahoo:

And another tick in the box for the old logic "if they don't contact you quickly, it can't be anything".

Does it mean they need to keep looking for what could be causing you problems then? But at least they haven't found anything that would be a big HA scary issue as it would have shown up in what they have done?

Biopsies are excellent reassurance. If the come back inconclusive, they tell you and try other more detailed tests. Yours came back fine, so you know there is no issue there.

On another note, Gill, I was sad to see you posting about your neighbour recently. I'm not on here much at the moment due to being busy at home but have been meaning to wish condolences as I knew you were very upset by his poor health. :hugs::flowers:

Did your son have a good time at V? And...how many days did it take you to get the mud out of all that clothing?!!! Was it like that old washing powder advert? :noangel::D

Hi Terry. Thank you for your concern. You were right of course, but my daft brain was trying to persuade me otherwise!

They are going to change my HRT I think because as my doctor thought all along these problems are hormonal in origin so hopefully a change in regime will sort it out.

Thank you for remembering about my neighbour too. His funeral was on Friday and he had a huge turnout and a very good send off - they did him proud.

Yep, the washing machine was working overtime after V, but he got a nasty bug a few days after coming home so couldn't go to Reading Festival as planned. Luckily the doctor gave him a letter (£30!) so that he could get a refund on his tickets otherwise we'd have lost over £300 :scared15:

It's nice to hear he had a good turnout, Gill. What he went through was awful but he's at peace now and no longer suffering the pain he must have been in. :hugs::flowers: It sounds like he meant a lot to a lot of people.

Your lad will have plenty more festivals he can go to, at least he didn't get stung...well apart from a £30 letter that would have been a standard one printed off a computer by a receptionist and a GP possibly signing it (but most standard letters have a signature already printed from file in any industry these days), that's the NHS cashing in!

You will be needing lots of this...
