View Full Version : Lump in anus - can thombrosis be painless?

Hi all,

I'm currently spinning into a circle of anxiety over a lump I found in my anus while traveling. I feel it quite prominently when I wipe myself and after I have done "my business". At any other time I have to put my finger "in there" to find it (TMI).

I went to the doctor this morning and she said that because it was hard it is not a hemorrhoid; they are soft. She said it could probably be a thrombosis, but those are always painful and mine isn't, which now makes me think the worst. She referred me to a specialist, but unfortunately there are crazy long waiting times here in Germany for those, and I know I'll just be a wreck until my appointment.

So my question is - have any of you had experiences with thrombosis not being painful? and for how long are they usually painful? As a small note, I have to mention that I did have pain some days before I discovered it, but the lump is still there meanwhile the pain went away. Is this normal?

I've had other symptoms too, such as bleeding when wiping (bright blood) and diarrhea, but none of those things are unusual for me since I suffer from fissures and IBS. The diarrhea has been a little worse this time, but I think I caught some sort of stomache flu while traveling in the US. Also, I'm 31 years old.

Hope to hear from you as I desperately need reassurance that this is not something sinister.

This is a really medical question, which no-one here can really answer. People can give their own experience, but that doesn't answer your specific situation.

All I can say is, is that if doctors think you have something immediately life-threatening, they fast-track it. I've known of doctors driving patients they saw to the hospital themselves that day. But if they think it's very low-probability, they schedule a test days or weeks away.

That's also what I thought, but I asked them "what if this is serious?" and they basically said that it doesn't make a difference, they just have long waiting time. It might be a language barrier, since I'm not German, but it felt weird to me, and not what I'm used to in Denmark.

And maybe just to elaborate a bit on the specific question, what I am asking is: have anyone had a thrombrosis without pain, or just pain for a few days, but still with swelling?

Hi, when you say thrombosis do you mean a thrombosed haemmorhoid?

I found a lump like you described over 5 years ago and freaked out imagining the worst case scenario. I saw my gp who did a dre and told me it was a thrombosed pile. Of course I didn't believe her despite the fact that she had been a gp for almost 30 years, so saw another gp who said exactly the same as the first.

Mine was hard and sometimes I could feel it on the outside and other times just slightly inside. I had pain for a couple of days to begin with and then it settled down and I felt no pain although if I had a bad ibs episode it would flare up and become tender again.

What you describe sounds identical to what I had.

Hope this helps

Yes I reckon I'm talking about a thrombosed pile, although the doctor said "a thrombosis". I think it's the same?

And yes, what you're writing does sound very similar to what I am experiencing. I thought the pain I was experiencing initially, before I noticed the lump, was due to fissures, but looking back I guess it does make sense.

What's worrying to me is that the GP didn't really feel confident about what it was, and that I now have to wait for an appointment to have it looked at.

I was actually doing rather good until today. I tried to feel if it had gotten any better, and it felt slightly larger than before, but it's hard to tell in that size range (doc said around 3.5 mm). It did feel slightly softer, but not sure. Anyway, later I went to do no.2 and it was kind of difficult for me. I think I have been constipated, and I had to strain to get it all out. Moreover, when I wiped it felt bigger than before, which is what is worriyng me now. It was also bleeding.

I'm worried sick over this, and yet again I've completed convinced myself that I have cancer :-(. I know the odds of having this particular type of cancer at my age is close to nothing, but still it happens and its within the range of possibilities :(

Woah woah woah try to take a deep breath your anxiety is not doing any favours to your digestive system considering that you have stated you are having diarrhea one minute than you are constipated the next I understand your concern it is mind numbing indeed i would also like to mention as embarrassed as I am that I suffer from these little buggers myself I have for many years in fact within the last 5 months I've had quite a few of these thrombosed hemmys so I can tell you first hand they can come painful or non painful they can come soft or hard depending on how much they have been pushed out they can even last up to a month. The reason why it felt bigger the last time you have a no.2 was because of the straining. Try to relax remember cancer doesn't come and go it can't go soft and than hard.

All the best.

P.s a thrombosis is indeed a thrombosed hemmy the true definition is a local clotting of the blood in a circulatory system.

Thank you for the reassuring words.

Everything you are saying makes sense, but it's just so difficult to look past symptoms that are so "tangible". But i do find comfort in knowing that they are not always painful, and that they can increase in size. I read somewhere that a tumor would often feel "raw/rugged" and the one I have seems pretty smooth on the surface.

Anyway, there's really nothing else to do than wait for Friday to come along where I have the meeting with the specialist.

My friend you are right I have also been told (by my gp) that a tumor has the texture of a stone (very rough and hard). If you don't mind I have a few questions 1: do you or did you have a mighty itch?
2: do you have a pain in either butt cheek
3: is there or was there any bright red blood on the toilet paper after a BM movement.

Now as weird as those questions may be they all point to thrombosed hemmys or just normal hemmys and I'm just asking the questions from my own experience to help you get a piece of mind.

I don't have a lot of itching, but some. I do see blood on the waper after a few wipes so I reckon it gets irritared from the wiping. I also have pain after BM, and the hours after. No butt cheek pain though.

What's adding to my worry is all the other stuff I am experiencing, which could just as easily be explained by anxiety and my IBS, but, you know, also couldn't. Symptoms include:

* changing bowel habits, D then C. Could be IBS and/or stomache flu caught in the US (that's when it started)
* shooting stomach pain/cramps. Could be my IBS.
* loss of appetite. Often happens when my anxiety kicks in.
* constant need to burp. IBS?

I too have suffered with ibs in fact it wasn't too long ago I posted a thread asking for advise on how to deal with it and I had all the exact symptoms as what you are having right now and I promise you I am not just saying it to cheer you up I had a few more symptoms too along with the constant belching, shooting pains, irregular bms etc such as a constant burning sensation in my mid abdomen and a constant growling stomach which was so embarrassing I too had a lack of appetite but I put that down to anxiety and stress. You'll be fine be positive and when Friday has passed you'll be a much happier person :)

So I went to the doctor today and it was a thrombosis after all. I found out that a thrombosis is not a hemorrhoid, but a rupture in a vein. I'm not sure what the difference is, but she made it clear that they were not the same.

Any way, the thing can easily be there for 4-6 weeks, and as long as it's not causing any problems for me I should just leave it be until. If it's still there after 6 weeks I could consider getting it drained, but for now it's fine.

Mercime
