Does anyone experience random muscle spasms while trying to fall asleep? This doesn't happen every night, but when it does, it drives me crazy. My leg will jerk, my arm, and the weirdest one- my abdomen. I looked it up and saw something about myoclonic jerks....is this dangerous? I don't want to keep reading because it will just freak me out :)

Can this be a result of anxiety or some other type of illness?

Thanks!

Myoclonic jerks are common and nothing to worry about.

I've had the same and for me it was definitely anxiety related, the more I worried about other health issues I started having jerking/twitching in my limbs like you described, and then I focused in on the twitching itself which makes it worse.

Basically, yes, you're fine!

Another term is hypnic jerks and they are totally totally normal and most people get them at some time. Being overtired or very anxious can make them worse. They are caused when your brain is falling into sleep, most people experience them just as they are nodding off and wake us up again with a jump:)
