Ok so I'm gonna talk about some stuff that might make some uncomfortable. So quit reading if you don't wanna talk baby talk stuff lol....

This is our first month actually trying to get pregnant. I read on a baby website that certain lubricants can actually damage sperm. We have been using KY which is on the no no list. It can cause low motility and alter the DNA So now I'm panicking that if one of the little guys made it home that it could be defective. I'm not trying to sound shallow but I'm so afraid that we could have damaged out child to be. What if we caused our baby to be born missing an arm or a horn in its forehead or some mental disability????

I'm comfortable with the bit at the beginning of the process! :yesyes: I would say good luck but it always sounds so wrong in these circumstances...:winks:

What does this damage to the sperm mean though? Does it damage the sperm so that are useless? So, making it home would do nothing?

If there were the potential for birth defects in such a product I would expect it to be clearly on the packaging and leaflet these days as they would otherwise get sued to high heaven by someone.

That's what I was thinking. I didn't really research it a whole lot but nothing jumped out on Google about people having kids with birth defects. Just problems conceiving. Think we are going to switch to sperm-approved Lube. Geez I don't remember it being so hard with out daughter! I just realized I was a week late and bam that's it!

Blimey, how can I not point out some bits in your last post like..."sperm-approved lube" which I'm guessing must mean a forum for the little blighters somewhere with reviews and "I don't remember it being so hard" :roflmao:

With something so important as this, and pregnant women & babies are about as protected as you can get by doctors, I would expect to see real credible people talking about this. After all, what you mentioned about defects is getting into things like Thalidomide which they have learned a lot from in terms of testing for the future. If something could cause birth defects, they would be really really strict on pointing that out as they wouldn't want a repeat of the fall out of drugs like Thalidomide and the damage it did years ago.

Lol terry. Yes there's different libricants out there. Something called pre-seed that actually helps the sperm swim along. I don't remember it being so complicated either. Wish they sold babies at Walmart. Would make it a lot easier!!

sperm-approved Lube.

Like they have a say in the matter ~lol~ But I bet the testimonials would be hysterical!

"When I'm swimming for my life to have a one in a million chance of reaching the egg, I recommend 'XXX Sperm Approved Lube'. It even makes it easier to swim!"

Positive thoughts, have fun and good luck!

Stuff like missing an arm or so birth defects are caused by tiny damages in DNA which is caused by males or females lifestyle choices. Only way to that lubricant could do that is if it is radioactive. No way that is possible. Sperms physical structure only preys roll in transporting DNA to the ovum.

Radioactive lubricant!

Kinky. :winks:

Oh my gosh... why ARE you worrying about this?!!! I have had infertility for 10 years plus (finally had success but it's been a long journey). You will not have a defective baby by using ky jelly. Those sperm just won't reach the egg or will not fertilise the egg. Even in the event of having an embryo with the wrong number of chromosomes etc the vast majority fail before you're even aware it happened!

Good luck!

My experience (and it's been over 23 years since trying to conceive) was just to relax and have fun :D If you focus too much on it, then the stress makes it more difficult. I recall just having a blast and then.... BINGO!

Yes the sperm comments on lube could be fantastic! Thanks guys! I think if it were a major deal there would be warnings all over the place.

There would be health campaigns.

Slogans like "think of the children" and "sperms are people too" :yesyes:

Do you really think that they would sell a product that causes birth defects, especially since it will be possibly used during conception? Everything that has been linked to birth defects would come with a huge warning saying not to use it if pregnant or any chance you can become pregnant. You would have heard of huge class action lawsuits if it was linked to birth defects as well.

Yep, they could tie Usain Bolt into it. http://www.bestemoticon.com/smiley/sport/spoort093.gif

Our main athlete advertising stuff is Jessica Ennis...I think she's already done enough for sperm motility. :whistles::noangel:

Just wanted to say good luck... I will be going through this soon too once I am fully off my meds. Should be in the next few weeks. Try to focus on it just being an exciting time, not put too much pressure on yourself. From what I have been told, it can take up to a year at least and that's normal.

So I went through this, this time last year......now we have a baby :)

We stopped using lube all together and literally conceived in the first month of trying after that. We found that the lube was literally stopping the swimmers!

Like everyone else has said no pressure, relax and just let things happen, it's so exciting when you find out!

Good luck :)

Use preseed lubricant. Its sperm friendly and may even assist in the process. In regards to your baby being born with a disability, I highly doubt that. Think about the millions of people that use lube daily and end up pregnant. If lube could cause birth defects I think the number of birth defects would be at an all time high. If you were to have a baby with deformities it will not be because you used lube. If something like this was to happen to you, I promise you will love that baby just the same.
