Hi

Feel a fool but totally stressed out of my mind. A few second after I swallow there is a slight gurgle or clicking just below the Adams Apple. It is worse after laying down, though it happens a bit during the day. Seems to happen only for saliva. Occasionally I get a "clonking" swallow when eating or drinking fluids (tea total). I don't think I have difficulty swallowing but occasionally get the "feeling" of a burp on the way that doesn't happen. Of course Googled and see things like MS, Pakinsons and my number one fear MND/ALS. I have expressed my fears to my doctor (who knows I am anxcious for the past year) but doesn't seemed worried. I have been given medicine for GERD - which I confess seems to have helped my Ashma a bit but I had no GERD symptoms as far as I know. I do have a slightly sore throat and constant feeling of something running down the back of my throat. Added to that a slightly tingly left cheek and well....

Really in first class panic mode and back on the Diazipam after months being off.

Dave,

I'm not a doc but do suffer from gerd. It has caused lots of throat probs. Ever heart of a crico-pharyngeal spasm?

Me neither ..... but that was a side-effect of gerd for me.

Hi
these are problems that i also have with my gerd, also with my anxiety, its really bad when i have them both together !!
In fact at the moment i have the saliva thing, i also suffer froma post nasal drip which adds to it all, you might have that as well. Never ever google mate its the worse thing you can do. I am not a doctor either but i have been a nurse for 24 years and ms and als symptoms dont tend to present like that despite what google will tell you, try and relax and go with the flow of your symptoms the more you fight them the worse they will be. Loads of posts on here about swallowing probs, globus etc and about acid reflux symptoms, have a read at them all it should reassure you. You are def not alone here.
Hope this helps.

hi dave,

i totally understand the clicking sensation that you describe...i experienced this along with globus hystericus (tight throat feel) for quite along time.
the explanetion i got from my doctor at the time was that it was merely throat muscles going into spasm and that they are complex and so there the clicking is nothing to worry about as muslce tightness is a cause of anxiety. the throat and neck muscles are very sensitive and prone to stress.

at the time i jus couldnt accept that stress was the cause thats why the throat probs lingered on for almost 6months, its jus a viscious cycle. which you can break once you try and accept that these symptoms are just a cause of anxiety.

hope your well.

Hey man, just wanted to say that I've had this random throat gurgling for going on three years now. I've never really felt anxious until the last few months or so, and I haven't ever been diagnosed as having anxiety disorder or having panic attacks, but I'm hoping I will be within the next two days or so (getting an MRI tomorrow).

Would this make your throat click at the side, if you pressed it with your your hands?? I am sufferng with the Globus, burping etc at the moment, but my main worry is the clicking/poppoing, when I press a certain area.

All those who answered my last posts. Thank you :-)

Hi Emma

I have been on meds since July 08 for my anxiety

Mine started off with stomach pain, Reflux, Stomach Churning, Chest Pain and a CONSTANT lump in my throat..................

I too used to examine myself and was horrified that when I move/press on my throat it used to like click/pop when I moved it side to side - I was convinced I had a bloackage tumor you name it then there is the old DR Google.............. But im sure you know that is not wise (even though im addicted to it)

So Emma please relax, That clicking would always happen if you applied pressure just your heightened state of anxiety making it seem more that what it is I promise x x

I'm nowhere near over my anxiety after having reflux everyday im convinced I have some undetected illness, Athough Ive had a barium swallow which showed nothing other than reflux (no hearnia or Tumor). I take omprezole everyday for the reflux which has eased the heartburn but still get all the other symtoms they are:

Tingly Hands
Heavyness in chest with occasional stabbing (like dagger)
Gurgling thoat/Tight throat
Excess Burping and wind
Stomach churning
Liquid sometimes travelling back up especially coffee
Metalic tasting burps (sorry)
Feeling like a burp is on the way but never surfices
Tingly/cold head which travels down one side of my face
CONSTANT mind chatter
Worry about families Health (constant)

SO as you can see hun your not alone x x But the throat thing is anxiety I promise. I hope this helps xxxx

hi emma,

the clicking sensation that you are feeling is most definitly due to muscular tension caused by stress and anxiety. i used to get this clicking in my neck/throat every time i swallowed, it would also happen when i moved my neck. i thought it was something sinister and serious and i think worrying over it made the problem worse.

when i started to reasurre my self that it was probably due to tension it did help me break the anxiety cycle. and after about 6 months the throat/neck problems went away. what you need to do is to think positive and keep reminding your self that its all due to stress and dont google any health anxietys because alot of scary stuff does come up that adds to ones worry.

hope that helps hun.
do take care

Hi,
I have been 'suffering' for some weeks with simular symptoms. I also find i have fluid type stuff in the throat (night time mainly) which crackles and makes me want to cough or clear the throat. Worrid is the permanent state i'm in. Docs given antibiotics, not worked yet. Any one out there with advice.

Does anyone else choke? I don't know how often, maybe every 3-7 days I'll choke with a dry mouth sometimes it's loud sometimes not but it's like an electrical impulse, an involuntary spasm and I've grown so tense about it happening that I avoid people or if they are around I anticipate the worst which makes it more likely to happen. It's like any relationship, friendship, casual conversation is held to ransom by the fear of choking which jeapordizes everything and humilates me.

I sometimes can. not. stop. thinking about swallowing! It's like, what is there to think about? it's a subconscious reflex and I know that but I the tension just winds up and the only was to relieve it is to swallow.

Hi all, I found this site through 'drum roll please' googling my symptoms!!!!! I'm kinda glad I did now though as I'm feeling slightly more reassured after reading through the threads.
I recently damaged my coccyx. Not sure how at all but been in pain for 2 weeks. I have been lying on my back whilst sleeping, to try and ease the pain. Two nights ago I was half asleep, and shifted into a more comfortable position. When I did this it felt like something in my neck shifted too, and since then whenever I swallow saliva I get this clicking feeling at the top of my neck (almost underneath the chin, where the jaw meets the neck at the front) I only get this if I'm facing forwards. If i turn my head to either side the clicking doesn't happen when I swallow. I don't get this sensation when I eat or drink, these both seem to ease it. I have noticed that I don't seem to be producing as much saliva as I did and my mouth and throat become dry very quickly!

Is this all stress/anxiety related, or could it be that I've genuinely done some damage to my throat when I moved!?!?! It's begining to really irritate me and make me panic about what long term damage it could cause.

I can quite understand the throat issues. I have occasional clicking when swallowing (on the right side) also jaw/tmj tightness and SCM/neck pain and tension.

Had ENT endoscope, Barium Swallow, MRI, and CT w/wo contrast of neck...all normal (just some arthritis and some bulging disks in a few spots on the cervical spine, but on the left side)

I believe mine is anxiety, but like most of us with health anxiety issues, believing doctors (or even worse, putting our faith in Dr. Google instead) leads us to magnify our symptoms beyond all belief.

I thank you all for your support, and you can count on my meditations and prayers on your behalf. Please remember me in yours. :hugs:

Howdy.

Can you tell if your gurlgling/pain is worse? A lot of those medications, especially if put together, can really dry you out and increase the urge to swallow all the time and paradoxically produce excessive saliva at times. How is our water/fluid intake?

my throat is clicking all the time and I am convinced it is related purely to anxiety and nothing else having had the Barium swallow, camera down nose inyo throat which both came back totally clear.

I find that laying flat out for a while eases it

Ive had the same exactly and have been to the doctors quite a bit also had a berium swallow and they found nothing. I also get the lump in my throat feeling but know that it is always due to stress. I first noticed these syptoms after having op for breast cancer and have had it on and off ever since and that was three years ago. Don't let it stress you it's annoying but it only gets worse the more you think about it.

Hey MidnightCalm.

I've been dealing with the gurgling noise in my throat after I swallow saliva, or even water for that matter. It gets worse as the day goes on.

I've been suffering from GERD for the past 2 years and just recently switched to Dexilant 60 mg almost 2 weeks ago.

Did you ever find a way to fix this?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Hi, I am new to this website and I also have the swallowing saliva problem. For me, I have some kind of the feeling of tightness in my throat only when I swallow saliva.. I was confused and always tried to swallow more saliva.. After that, I go to Gastro Specialist (for 3 times already).. I have the endoscopy and everything is normal except my body got Gastritis..it seems that this gastritis trigger reflux and makes my throat become tight..I was given Pariet 40 mg per day... the first week I felt very okay! like a normal person..but the second week and third week I feel the symptom comes back!!!.. I just want to know, is it safe to consume PPi (such as pariet, nexium) as much as 40 mg per day for a long time? I have temptation to reduce it to 20 mg per day only, but my doctor dont allow it.. and has anyone get perfectly okay after the PPi medication? and for how long do we need to take PPi? I also consume nexium before the pariet..and stop nexium triggers some rebound effect which is this saliva thing..
