View Full Version : Dilated pupil is controlling my life right now

Hello all -

I am new to this site, but have been endlessly searching for some answers/suggestions outside of what the doctors around me are saying. I'm glad I found somewhere where I can explain what's going on and how worried I am without people dismissing it and saying I'm "fine". Though I am probably "fine", my extremely high anxiety is telling me otherwise.

I am a 20 year old, otherwise healthy, female. I was at work Wednesday afternoon (it is now Friday) when I went into the bathroom and noticed that my right pupil was very dilated, and not reacting to light. The left, on the other hand, was just fine. I left work and headed for the ER. Mind you I have no other symptoms at this point. None, but I panic and I panic hard. I don't remember driving to the hospital, I was crying, and I lost hearing out of my right ear temporarily I was so scared.

I get checked into the ER, and one of the PA's sees me. She asks if I had been exposed to any chemicals (I have, Oxivir 5 and lots of bleach at work). She asked if I had any houseplants (and I do, a spider plant that I just so happened to clean up earlier that morning) because all those things can cause a dilated pupil. I didn't think this was enough of an explanation so I was referred to an eye specialist. The eye specialist ruled out an aneurism (HARSH eye drops), and he looked behind my eye.

The night before this happened, I broke a phenergan tablet over the lid of my contact case and the contact case (I have extreme panic induced nausea/vomiting), but I rinsed it before putting it back on the case. I put those contacts in the next morning. It is definitely a possibility as phenergan is known to cause eye dilation. He believes this is was the cause and sent me home.

My pupil started getting smaller that night, but it is now Friday and it is still not back to normal. The doctor says this is normal and I should be worried if it didn't change at all, or if it became dilated again.

To someone with the amount of anxiety I have, I just dont feel confident with that answer. I feel a dull ache behind both my eyes and in the back of my head as I type this, and my the eye that was dilated feels kind of "goopy". I'm so very worried - I can't sleep or eat. I'm still so scared I am dying from cancer, or a tumor, or SOMETHING. I don't know if this is a mind over matter thing, or if those symptoms are really there.

I have experimented with drugs (cocaine, molly) but nothing for over a week before I noticed my pupil, and the other people who took these drugs are absolutely fine.

Has this ever happened to anyone? ONE dilated pupil? I started my period today, if that helps.

Please help my mind relax. I am going to go crazy.

It's too much of a coincidence that this happened the day after your contact lens was exposed to phenergan.

Anything brain related has pretty much been ruled out by your optician, plus the fact the pupil is now returning to normal size.

If it persists then go back to your doctor, but chances are it'll return to normal in a few days.
