Hey

I'm 27-years old student. I had compulsive thoughts 6 years ago about feeling in the throat and swallowing but I overcame it. It lasted around half a year. This time it's something different.

This happened already in 2013. I went to student health service dentist to get cavity fixed and filled. Didn't think much about this since ever since I was a child I had gone to dentist many times. The dentist was late and during the procedure she seemed very unconfident. When I returned to University I felt that the biting sensation felt weird. I was sure she had made some kind of mistake. The next day I went back to the dentist. She smoothed the filling a bit. However, again when I returned I felt that the biting was off somehow. So yet again I returned to the dentist the next day to explain that it still felt weird. At that point the nurse started laughing and I felt really bad. The dentist, however, still smoothed the filling a bit.

Well even that didn't help as when I returned I felt it still wasn't good. I didn't want to go back to the same Place though, as I was too embarrased especially because the nurse laughed (maybe not to me, dunno) so I decided to go to Private dentist. I went to Private dentist and explained that this one teeth feels weird. What he did however, was that he smoothed a totally different teeth! And this started a cycle for me where I went to numerous dentists and used a HUGE loads of money. Luckily the problem was only on the right side of my mouth and the feeling sensation of biting in my left side still felt totally perfect. So at some point I decided there is nothing I can do for now and let it be.

However, I had a lot of cavity in the upper nr.6 left side mouth which had to be taken care of. I underwent the procedure and it went fine. At that point I decided to mention what had happened in the past as that dentist seemed very realiabe and I was thinking that maybe finally something could be done to the right side. I told him I had went to numerous dentists and they had all smoothed different tooth in the right side. Thus I was afraid the whole biting was inbalanced between the right side and the left side. The dentist checked this and noticed that there is something but he wasn't sure what to do. Suddenly he said that well let's try this and started smoothing the 4th upper teeth in my left side before I could say anything (or I was too afraid to object). That's when it happened. The left side was now off as well. When I bit my tooth together I felt uncomfortable feeling that the front teeth in my left side was now touching the lower left front teeth. It felt A LOT more uncomfortable now so I started going to the dentists again. They smoothed the front teeth a bit. What happened though was that when they smoothed one then the sensation went to another teeth like an endless cycle.

At some point I realised this and stopped going to the dentists. What had happened though that due to the constant smoothing and biting the lower left front teeth had curved front. (I'm quite sure it wasn't like this before) Now it is this curved teeth that is touching its upper counter part and I'm quite sure it would just bend more if more smoothing would be done.

My upper front tooth and 2nd tooth both in left and right in down have been a bit curved since already I was a child. However because starting from 4th the left side tooth have been elevated enough so that even though curved the front teeth have not touched each other when biting. The smoothing of the left side teeth was enough to lower the elevation so that the front teeth would touch (or the pressure to them just increased a lot)

At some point in 2015 I was so sick of this and decided to go to orthodontics specialist to discuss this and perhaps get braces. She FINALLY listened to me and wanted all the Records of my previous visits. I gave them to her and she promised to read them. Next time when I went there she told she had read the stuff. She explained that the teeth in the right side of my mouth are originally bit curved and that's why it might feel weird. Of course she also mentioned the front teeth as well. She said though that dentist never smooth MUCH so not much damage has been done anyways. Also the purpose of the teeth is that they are closed only when eating. I was so happy she listened to me and explained this stuff. I decided I would let this thing be and that some things couldn't be helped.

During 2015 and 2016 I worked full time and didn't study at the University. I don't think I thought much about the teeth. Every now and then when I closed my teeth to swallow I might feel the front tooth. I tried to bite in a position that I would't feel it. Also I started a habit of trying to pull the one front tooth that had curved back to it's Place By pushing it against the upper front tooth. All in all during my work time I didn't really mind about the tooth and I was already happy I had overcome this problem.

Then in autumn 2016 I continued studying again. It was then that the problems started to come back. I noticed when sitting and listening to the lecture I had a habit of biting my teeth softly together and kinda just feel them. I dunno if I've had this habit my whole life. You know the same thing when someone is moving their legs etc. Anyway it all came back to me. What's worse it's very hard to avoid the front tooth not touching since while listening to a lecure my chin usually leans to my hand or fist so it kinda moves forward. Or then my head is in such a pose that the front teeth get contact even if I don't lean to my hand.

It feels really terrible now as I love studying but all my thoughts are on the biting. I really don't know what to do. It feels almost hopeless to think this thing has been going since 2013. Really like hopeless. I could just stop studying and do physical work that keeps my body going so I don't have time to think about teeth (as I guess happened while I was working 2015-2016). I don't want to give up on this but bit By bit I overpowered By this.

What I'm still thinking of trying:

1. Get occlusal splint which is meant for people who bite a lot during nightime. It prevents the teeth touching each other and I could wear it during lectures. (it's kinda like the one boxers use)

2. Ask a dentist to put filling to the 4th teeth in the left side so the left side would be elevated a bit and the front teeth wouldn't touch each other again.

3. Get braces. This one might fix it all for good but it's expensive (3000e), takes long time and is risky. There is no turning back and the braces require the use of retention wire for many years. Would I get stuck on that one too?

All in all I'm very desperate about this problem. As for the swalling problem or sensation in the throat I was insured there is nothing wrong and realised it's just me. But for this one I know for sure that the feeling is different from what it was before. The problem is I don't know how it was before as I never paid any attention to biting (even though I prolly had the biting habit during studying or thinking as it felt good).

Teeth is the first thought that I have when I wake up in the Morning. I dream about returning back to time so that I never would have gone to that original dentist. It almost feels like these thoughts about my teeths are so ingrained in me that it's like a clould that is blocking other thoughts. I want to get rid of thinking about my biting sensation. Please.

Hi there,

I'm not an expert about teeth and biting, but if you can bite your food OK, I wouldn't see it as a problem.

More importantly, I knew someone who was obsessional like you about a particular problem until he finally got over that problem: he finally sorted it. Guess what happened next? He got an obsession about something different!! Instead of seeing dentists, why not see someone about obsessive thoughts instead?
