Hi there I'm back after months and months where I've been really well actually on my 20mg citalopram I just wanted to ask weather anyone has experienced heavier periods since starting it it seems to be since I moved to 20mg they've got heavier.I just wondered if anyone had experienced this .

Hey Beckie, glad you are doing well! I was on escitalopram and found my periods seemed a bit different, sometimes heavier. I wasn't sure if it was from the med or not, but I do remember noticing it and wondering.

So did they improve after u stopped the meds or continue to be weird

My GP actually told me that this can be a side effect of citalopram. I guess it's worth it if you are good on the meds x

Seen mine wasn't sure and sed I can come down to ten for few months to see if things change again and see if it is the meds which I doing she isn't worried about it being anything serious she sed but o have put weight also due to the bloody meds so she thought that cud be the problem maybr

Well it's hard to know bc I was on the birth control pill and came off both birth control and meds together ... so my periods are wacky right now.

SSRIc can affect hormone activity. They, for example, bind with (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4632899/) estrogen receptors, either enhancing, or reducing estrogen activity. However, probably the more significant affect on menstrual flow is that they are mild anticoagulants, i.e. blood thinners.
