Hi. I've had a chronic cough for many years and had a clear x Ray four years ago. Was still suffering from it so went to doc three weeks ago. He gave me a steroid nasal spray and it has totally cleared up. However, he said although my chest sounded clear he would send me for another x Ray just to be sure. I went there this morning and the technician rolled her eyes when I mentioned the success of the nasal spray and said they can cover up more serious issues and she doesn't like them. She's now got me really worried about lung cancer or something like that. I'm a non smoker. Is she correct?

Hi She is a radiooligist not a Gp take no notice she really shouldn't have not said that to you,but perhaps didn't realise you have HA perhaps stuff like that should be in your medical records  reassurance from me no problem your X-Ray will be just fine, so try not to worry :) Let us know the results when you get them and you can hopefully move on from this :yesyes:

Thank you. I have googled this and the steroid spray is often one of the first recommendations to try and address the cough, so my logical mind says a GP wouldn't want to mask a serious illness. Also, I can't find any reference to it doing so. She had a bit of an attitude, so maybe she thought she was being smart.

Totally agree with BigBoyUK here - the technicians are NOT consultant radiologists, I would not even go over what she said to you, the only one you need to listen to is the consultant looking at your chest X-ray and your GP with the result.

I had a chest xray 4 weeks ago and the technician told me specifically they cannot interpret results, the xrays get placed in a queue and diligently looked at by specialist consultants that know how and what to look for on xray's.

Mine came back clear, yours will too :)

I have a chronic night cough that wakes me up during the night for about 5 months now, I should try some steroid nasal spray........

You should. It's the only thing that's worked for me in ten years. I don't know why they didn't try it before this.

Over three weeks. No result. Doctor chased up but said they're taking three to four weeks! She said it would normally be fast tracked if anything wrong. In the meantime my cough totally cured with spray. It's great. Why didn't they try it years ago?

How is it working for you?

Sorry not responded earlier not been logging onto the site as I want to cure my anxiety but also get support (if that makes sense)

Well I have tried the nasal spray NO JOY unfortunately :(

I have been back to the GP yesterday and he has increased my PPI for acid reflux and had a good talk to me about weight loss and how it could be affecting my breathing and diaphragm when I am laid down. I am going to give the meds a go, he wants to see me back in 6 weeks for a weight check and cough check, if the cough gets very bad or the cough is still present when I see him again he will refer me to respiratory unit at the hospital for further investigation.

He said that dry coughs during the day or those that occur particularly at night when sleeping are relatively caused by benign conditions or nothing at all.

Its a monitoring situation now but my fear is lung cancer, he assured me he is very confident this is not sinister in the slightest and if it were he would
have fast tracked me for further 'lung cancer investigations'

Its a wait and see situation.
Have you received your chest xray results? I have never known it to be this long BUT I think you are fine esp that your cough has been resolved - wish mine would!

It did with me. And benign conditions doesn't sound serious .
The thing is you have a good dr who is monitoring you and if he felt you had a remote chance of cancer you would be fast tracked :) Cheers

Very true just wish they could tell me what is wrong and what the reason for my daily coughing is all about, it truly feeds off my anxiety and vice versa!

Hi, I should have replied as it annoys me when other people don't report on final results. My x ray was clear. It took four weeks and the doc had to chase it up! My minor miracle continues and my cough has cleared up after more years than I can remember. I just wish they had tried this year's ago. I'm sure there is nothing serious wrong with you, as my friend is a GP and he says it is very rare for a cough to be something sinister. I understand your frustration though, it's really annoying that an apparently simple condition can't be diagnosed.
