While most can tolerate a jump straight to 150mg, I think doing it in 2 steps with a week at 125mg is better, especially if you've experienced severe side-effects after previous dose increases, but okay this with your GP first.

Hard to understand if the initial side effects, are side effects or anxiety

They could be from either. An anxiety mind is certainly capable of producing them.

Could the 100mg kick in,before the extra 50mg starts to work?

Sure, a dose increase won't delay/prevent it. The only potential issue is any side-effects triggered by the increase may mask the therapeutic response.

If alcohol is helping you sleep that's okay in the short-term to get you through the insomnia phase, but it's not a good idea to keep drinking on a daily basis for it inhibits neurogenesis which is the mechanism by which antidepressants work. The occasional drink or two is okay, but drinking every day is problematic.
