Well i had my 2hr session of hypnotherapy last friday. it was a very strange experience, i felt quite odd and the 'techniques' used were a bit alien to me but i came away feeling positive if not any better than i had when i went in. my chest felt exactly the same walking home as it did walking there.
on a positive note i have been to the gym the last 2 nights. the first night i only did a 10 min cycle and a wee swim, then last night i ncreased the cycle and did a few lightish weights, etc.

this is obviously a step forward, yet i still couldnt relax. my arm would get numb every so often and i would have to try to put thoughts of an 'impending heart attack' to the bck of my mind. im glad to say im still here today!

however, all day at work im still being affected by a permanent strange feeling in my left arm. its a bit like tingling/numbness and is particularly in my upper left arm. theres no constant chest pain but is a constant 'what is this' going on in my head. can anyone explain why my arm would tingle like this all the time. its making it very difficult to see the successes of the last few days, making me feel im no better than ever. i also still feel dazed all the time. can anyone explain these things and what would bring them on other than a serious health issue??!!

so overall, the hypnotherapy has encouraged me to try excercise again but certainly has done nothing to 'cure' me of my symptoms as i was told it hopefully would....

Do you have more sessions booked? I find that my symtoms take a while to go away. Especially if I have been particularly stressed/anxious. It may just be that the feelings you have in your arm will take a while to fade.

For me the feeling of tightness in my chest and neck are the first ones. I used to feel I couldnt breathe and worry about fainting and generally make myself feel worse. Now I try the breathing exercises and relaxation I have learned and so far so good. I still get the early symtoms, but luckily they do not increase.

Hope this helps. Try to stay positive. (I'm also listening to Paul McKenna CD on confidence, which helps me stay more positive!)

hello there,

well firstly it would be a big benefit to you to come to accept that there really is no outside 'cure' for anxiety, every single person on the planet experiences it!

all the normal people you know get anxiety when they are stressed the only difference is that they dont interpret it to mean danger,

here is an example: my eldest sister who is 42 had a very bad experience with sone minor drug taking when she was 15 years old, in fact apart from pot she never toudhed any drugs preferring booze!! anyway she was a jid at the time and these drugs whatever they were gave her a pretty nightmarish time, the doc was called and they had to give her valium.
now i know for a fact she was affected by this for ages, and has avoided thinking about that episode bacause of how it makes her 'feel' - freaked out!

last night we were talking about my progress and all the meaning of these disorders etc when i asked her had she ever seen any of the 'house of agoraphobics'? programme that was on last year and she replied'oh yes i did see a bit of that but i had to turn it over' so i said'oh why was that' and she replied' because it made me think of that time with the drug thing' and she didnt like the way watching the people panicking was making her feel!!

this is a person who just lives her life. she has a job she lives alone with her daughters, she travels all over, goes to gigs and other things and socialises every week, and enjoys her life.

and here she was talking about experiencing anxiety, but she didnt start questioning 'what does this mean?' does this mean im going crazy/cant cope/going to die?'

NO SHE DOESNT!!!!!!

she just said she slapped herself on the thighs (whicch made me laugh) and sort of shook her self out of it!! and she now doesnt think about that time until she has to.

now shes still avoiding those feelings but it doesnt matter because it isnt interferring with her life, but she could go 1 step further and just think about that time and let the 'horrible' feelings it produces wash over her and see that just remembering that awful experience doesnt mean she will 'freak out'.

anyway i hope that explains what i mean and also i have tingling all the time, there are links on here explaining exactly why, but at the end of the day if we pump our systems with anxiety produced adrenaline then these are the sorts of things you are going to feel.

if you keep doing exercise you will probably start to feel better very soon, it works very well for me as a release for the adrenaline, remember it is really for you to'fight or run' not to sit there just feeling it!!!

When I had hupnothearapy years ago, I had 6 sessions and almost gave up after the first as I wanted a quick fix, which clearly wasn't going to happen.

Did they give you a tape/cd to listen inbetween sessions, this is very important to do.

Agree the arm sensation thing is probably down to the breathing as I know when I am not breathing properly I get a tingling feeling in my head.

hi mev,

the docs know that all of the physical symptoms people feel is due to increased adrenaline and hyperventilating, the way you breathe is either making it worse or making it better!!!! it is always involved!

please try to reassure yourself that what you are feeling is side effects of having adrenaline(a hormone) pumped into your system on a regular basis.

thanks for all the replies guys. i do have 1 more 2hr appointment on monday, but was not given anything to use in between. the guy seemd incredibly confident that 1 or 2 sessions would help solve the problem.

a number of ppl here refer to increased breathing and adrenaline causing the arm numbness/tingles/burning sensation-however i am never concious of any change/increase in my breathing. im also on beta blockers which i thought would stop the adrenaline?!
sorry for the constant need for reassurance! its just that its been going on for 6months now, and with a holiday in 2weeks i was hoping and praying to be better after last friday!

if you get into deep breathing from the stomach - in for 4 secs and out for 4 or 5, you will start to see a difference between upper chest breathing and deep diapraghmatic breathing, this is where you lift up your diaphram(cant spell it!)

when i am soooo anxious and tingly and palpatating etc etc i cant even get the breath into my stomach i am that tense(i have been known to wretch and actually puke because of stomach tension!)

so what you do there is cup the hands around your mouth unless you have a paper bag handy, something i dont have! this get the co2 and oxygen levels back to what they should be, the hyperventilating is very complex, you actually dont have the right balance of stuff at the time and it can make you very very poorly, which is why everyone feels soooo ill!!!!

but we are not ill!!!
just hyperventilating!!

also it takes time to master, and you have to do it conciously at first, yiou have to sit quietly and make it part of your day really at first as much as 5 times a day!!!

make it a goal of getting better, to master deep breathing skills, and see if it works i guarantee if you actually do it everyday at numerous times you will start to notice that you are currently not breathing correctly eveb if you arent aware of it!

all the best and have a good holiday
