View Full Version : Fearful of Heart Issues and Parkinson's

I haven't posted here in a while. I know I have anxiety, but from time to time I get fearful of having much stronger ailments/diseases. At one point I was sure that I was having some sort of neurological issues due to head pressure and such. I've seen many specialists over the years for all of my symptoms. I've always been cleared. I even see a doctor once a week for Testosterone Replacement Therapy, so my heart rate, blood pressure, etc are all monitored.

Every so often I've been getting these sensations of my heart skipping a beat or something. It seems quite rare, but increases when I think I am stressed out. It's an abrupt feeling/sensation in my chest on the left side where I feel the heart skip a beat, I believe. It can be acid reflux for all I know or something else, but it feels like the heart. This sensation then makes me feel anxiety and make it so I can't catch my breath for a fraction of a second, but it still sets off my anxiety. It can happen when I am standing, sitting, or laying down. I've been to the Cardiologist and he said my heart is in good shape and to not even come back for 5-6 years.

As for Parkinson's, this is a new fear of mine. I look over the symptoms and it just... kind of makes sense. What made me look into it moreso was the fact that my right eyelid has been flickering on and off for the past 2-3 days, which can be due to fatigue. But then I kept reading about it, and I have other symptoms such as body tremors/muscle spasms in my arms, legs, hands, feet, etc. I think it is due to being on antidepressants (I am on Effexor at the moment). I have had it for a long time now (years) and have gotten used to it, but reading up on these two both being part of Parkinson's scared me. So, of course, I kept reading and see that these are all also symptoms that I have:

Muscular: Stiff muscles, difficulty standing/walking (dizziness, muscle tightness causing imbalances maybe), problems with coordination (dizziness)

Sleep: Daytime sleepiness (fatigue - I am so tired most often times)

Whole Body: Fatigue (I feel incredibly weak and tired at times, but I can push a fair amount of weight due to keeping engaged in exercise), dizziness, poor balance

Cognitive: Difficulty thinking or understanding (Taking Adderall for this at times, but sometimes I have a deep feeling of feeling "out of it" or "disconnected" from reality. Other times I have a very hard time reading, learning, retaining, and/or recalling information. My eyes will physically scan words in a book and it's like I didn't pick up a word). I wasn't always like this, but post-high school (which was 11 years ago) it seems to have been a growing issue. Adderall helps a bit). This one hurts the most since there are so many things I want to learn, and sometimes I do learn about stuff, but then weeks later I cannot recall it.

Speech: Soft voice (sometimes I feel like my voice comes out softer than it should. I've been working on using my diaphragm more in speech and lowering the tone)

Mood: Anxiety or apathy... I have both. The latter is potentially due to depression. Like, I have empathy, as in I feel bad for people or their situations, but I don't actively feel emotions much anymore, if that makes sense.

Nasal: Distorted sense of smell. My sense of smell has been weak for some time. I can smell stuff, but some times people will ask me if I smell something, but I cannot. It's selective and random, I guess.

There are some more symptoms out there, but I just get fearful of having such a potentially debilitating disease. I am doing whatever I can to inhibit any of the symptoms. For example, for the fatigue I got checked for and was stated to have Sleep Apnea, so I got a CPAP Machine. Cognitive issues? Adderall. Muscle stiffness? Exercise, stretching, foam rolling, etc.

I guess I just need reassurance. I am going to bring it up with my Psychiatrist next week.

My dad is is 71 and has Parkinson's . Your symptoms don't sound like his. He has severe trouble walking so he shuffles his feet . He also cannot get out of a chair. His left hand shakes. All of these symptoms are controlled by medication. He's sharp as a whistle though. No cognitive problems at all. I doubt you have Parkinson's .

I have some heart issues, pretty serious ones at that. That said, my palpitations were due 100% to anxiety. I have had many if not all the symptoms you listed, and aside from my heart, I am as healthy as can be. And my actual heart is healthy too. Just a bad valve and its effect.

You need help for your anxiety as opposed to physical ailments. Everything you described can trace its roots to anxiety.
