Hi I’m just wondering if anyone had good success with private therapy? I’ve had CBT in the past but you only get 6 sessions in the area and then your discharges. I found it helpful but didn’t really get much out of it. I thought finding someone private might be a better alternative. I just want to talk to someone who will tell me where I need to be and how to get over feeling anxious and how to stop turning every ache and pain into something sinister

Yes I went private. I saw a psychiatrist for nearly 3 years. I have never received free sessions so can’t really comment on the differences good or bad. My psychiatrist was one of the top in his field. I don’t have HA anymore. So I guess he was worth the money. lol

With private therapy you can of course choose who you see, not just get allocated a therapist as you do on the NHS. It's important to do a bit of research into qualifications and specialisations and always good to get recommendations if you can. Sometimes you are offered a free phone chat to see if the therapist can offer what you want and you can get an idea of whether you would be happy to work with them or not.

It's not cheap but who can put a price on recovery? Good luck!

Yes, I've just started private therapy. It's expensive but hopefully worth it. My therapist offers CBT but also psychotherapy so I am hoping a combination of different approaches will help me.

Yes. I went one on one for around 6 months after my first heart attack for some depression. It really helped. I also did some one on one after my cancer along with some CBT exercises I got here.

Over here it's a little different as we don't have the universal healthcare so a lot of providers are private. I have seen a few - some helped more than others. The nice thing about the ones I saw was that they would meet with you for a few sessions and if it didn't feel like the right fit, they would refer you to another provider or you could opt out yourself. I was able to seek somebody out who followed the models of therapy I find helpful and had the right personality.

That’s great advice. Thank you all.
